BRUSSELS: Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) recent improvements to cloud computing have drawn criticism from Amazon (AMZN.O) and Google, a unit of Alphabet (GOOGL.O), who claim that they hinder competition and deter users from transferring to competing cloud service providers.
The US software behemoth unveiled revised licencing agreements and other changes on Monday that will go into effect on October 1 and that they claim will make it simpler for cloud service providers to compete. The arrangements will not apply to cloud services provided by Google, Amazon, Alibaba (9988.HK), or Microsoft.
After smaller European Union rivals complained to EU antitrust officials about Microsoft’s cloud service activities, the latter questioned market participants about the matter and the effects they had. This is when Microsoft made its move.

ISLAMABAD: As the cash-strapped country searches for ways to lessen the impact of the devastating floods, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail stated on Wednesday that the federal government will take into consideration purchasing commodities from India.

Speaking at a conference in Islamabad, he stated, “The PTI has learned how to manage the national economy while coping with obstacles.””We’ll be completely prepared the next time we take office,”

Sudan journalists hope to enshrine freedoms with first union in decades
For the first time in more than three decades, Sudanese journalists have formed an independent union to shore up hard-won press freedoms that have been imperilled since last year’s military coup.
The newly-formed journalists’ syndicate held elections on Saturday, the first since ousted president Omar al-Bashir dissolved independent unions after rising to power in 1989.
“It’s a big step towards building the civilian democratic state that Sudanese people aspire to,” said Mohamed Abdelaziz, a member of the newly-formed syndicate.
Saturday’s ballot named as head of the syndicate Abdelmoniem Abu Idris, a correspondent for Agence France-Presse in Khartoum.
Reporters Without Borders, which ranks Sudan 151 out of 180 countries in its 2022 World Press Freedom Index, welcomed the “positive step”.
Pro-democracy groups in Sudan have also hailed the move.
“Press freedom was muzzled under Bashir,” said Hend Helmy, an assistant professor at the University of Khartoum’s media department.
“It will be a big challenge for the new syndicate as there is an entire generation of journalists who were brought up during this period.”
Press freedom was severely curtailed under Bashir, who was ousted in April 2019 on the back of mass protests.
Under his three-decade rule, authorities regularly targeted journalists and confiscated entire print-runs of newspapers for publishing articles deemed critical of Bashir’s policies.
His 2019 fall ushered in new press freedoms that saw local TV airing mass protests calling for civilian rule.
Media outlets ran articles with the protest slogans of “Freedom, Peace and Justice”.
‘Persecution of journalists’ A fragile transition was agreed in August 2019, heralding a break from decades of media censorship, repression and abuses under Bashir.
Under the transition, attacks targeting journalists largely diminished.
Critics appeared on local TV and ran op-eds lambasting the government’s performance.
Venice film fest launches with Adam Driver ‘toxic event’
The Venice Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday with Adam Driver starring in a topical opening film about a deadly health crisis, misinformation and prescription drugs.
“White Noise” is the first of four Netflix-produced films competing for the top prize Golden Lion over the 11-day festival, as the streaming service seeks to burnish its artistic credentials.
It stars Driver as a Hitler studies professor in a small college town, which experiences an “Airborne Toxic Event”.
The story is adapted from a famous 1985 novel by Don DeLillo that dissects US consumer culture. It reunites Driver with director Noah Baumbach following their lauded “Marriage Story”.
Netflix has become a key backer of more intellectual directors as traditional Hollywood studios fixate on superhero and franchise blockbusters.
Later in the festival, the streamer is premiering the highly anticipated “Blonde”, a dark retelling of Marilyn Monroe’s tragic life, with rising star Ana de Armas in the lead role.
It is also behind “Bardo”, the latest from Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who launched his previous films “Birdman” and “The Revenant” in Venice on their way to Oscar glory.
Award-winning directors The world’s longest-running film festival, first held 90 years ago, takes place on the beach-lined Lido island.
It is well-timed to launch Academy Award campaigns, with a particularly strong track record for directors in recent years.
Eight of the last 10 Best Director Oscars have gone to films that premiered at Venice, including the most recent winner Jane Campion for “Power of the Dog” — another Netflix production.
Also gracing the Lido on Wednesday was iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve, who wore a Ukrainian flag pinned to her jacket as she arrived to pick up a lifetime achievement award.
The coming days will see fans trying to catch a glimpse of Timothee Chalamet, who stars as a love-sick cannibal in road movie “Bones and All”, which reunites him with “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino.
There is early buzz, too, for “The Whale” starring Brendan Fraser — who has been largely absent from the screen since his heyday in films like “The Mummy” two decades ago — as a morbidly obese man trying to reconnect with his daughter.
US life expectancy drops for 2nd straight year, due to Covid
Life expectancy for Americans dropped in 2021 for the second straight year — the biggest two-year decline in a century — notably due to the Covid-19 pandemic, US health officials announced Wednesday.
US life expectancy at birth dipped by nearly a full year from 2020 to 2021, to 76.1 years, the lowest average since 1996, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
By comparison, Americans in 2020 were expected to live 77 years, a sharp drop from the 78.8 years in 2019.
“The declines in life expectancy since 2019 are largely driven by the pandemic,” said the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.
Coronavirus-related deaths accounted for three quarters of the drop in 2020, and about half of the decline in 2021, it said.
Some 15 percent of the 2021 slide could be attributed to deaths from accidents or unintentional injuries, notably drug overdoses.
The sharpest decline in life expectancy last year occurred among Native Americans and Alaska Natives, at 1.9 years, followed by white Americans (1.0) and Black Americans (0.7), according to the CDC.
Life expectancy for Native Americans was estimated at a mere 65.2 years in 2021, compared to 70.8 years for Black Americans and 76.4 years for white Americans.
Health officials also noted the growing gap in life expectancy between men and women, a difference which widened from 5.7 years in 2020 to 5.9 in 2021 — the largest gap since 1996.
American women in 2021 had a life expectancy of 79.1 years, compared to 73.2 years for men.
Covid-19 was the third-leading cause of death in the United States last year, just as it was in 2020, after heart disease and cancer, according to a previous CDC report.
More than 1.04 million people with Covid-19 have died in the United States since early 2020.
After a peak in early 2022, Covid-related US deaths have dropped, although the country still records about 400 such deaths per day.
2018 Vuelta champion Yates joins growing list of Covid cases
Simon Yates, the 2018 Vuelta champion, withdrew ahead of the 11th stage of this year’s edition on Wednesday after testing positive for Covid-19, his BikeExchange team announced.
The 30-year-old Briton was sitting in fifth position overall after gaining a place in Tuesday’s time trial.
“Team-BikeExchange-Jayco leader Simon Yates has been forced to withdraw from La Vuelta a España after testing positive for COVID-19 ahead of today’s stage 11,” read a team statement.
“The 30-year-old suffered with mild symptoms overnight and returned a positive test this morning, and in accordance with strict team policy, Yates will not continue in La Vuelta.
“Team BikeExchange-Jayco’s medical team will carry out further testing to ensure the safety of other team riders and staff members.”
Ineos rider Pavel Sivakov joined Yates on the sidelines later on Wednesday, the Russia-born French cyclist also testing positive for Covid-19.
Sivakov had entertained hopes of victory in the Vuelta having won the warm-up race the Tour de Burgos — the 25-year-old was ninth overall going into Wednesday’s stage.
Yates and Sivakov’s withdrawals take to 16 the number who have tested positive for Covid since last Friday.
Four cyclists had to pull out of Tuesday’s stage due to Covid including Irishman Sam Bennett, who won two stages on this year’s race.
The remaining 154 riders will tackle Wednesday’s 191.2 kilometres stage from Alhama de Murcia to Almeria.
Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel holds a 48-second lead over Primoz Roglic in the overall standings.
Doctors in the occupied West Bank are struggling to save Palestinians from permanent disability after being shot in an upsurge of violence linked to Israeli raids targeting Palestinian militants.
At Rafidia Surgical Hospital in Nablus, in the northern West Bank, a teenager with bandaged legs was carried up the stairs by another boy.
He had been shot below the knee in overnight clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian residents of Balata, a refugee camp on the edge of the city.
The 16-year-old, whose mother soon arrived in the emergency room, was the latest Palestinian to be hit in the near daily rounds of gunfire erupting in the northern West Bank.
“There is a lot of pressure on the hospital, as a result of the various injuries and the large amount of injuries,” said Dr Fouad Nafaa, head of Rafidia’s surgical department.
The spike in violence is tied to raids launched across the West Bank in recent months by Israeli forces, many targeting armed militants in Nablus and the Jenin area further north.
The Israeli military says the often lethal raids are necessary to root out extremists involved in carrying out or planning attacks against its citizens, after a spate of deadly rampages inside the Jewish state earlier this year.
On a single day in August, medics from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) treated 69 patients with gunshot wounds in Nablus after an army raid.
Nablus militant Ibrahim al-Nabulsi was one of four people killed in that raid on August 9.
Many of the wounded were taken to Rafidia, where Nafaa said the team has been receiving “very difficult” cases lately.
The controversial subject of teenage pregnancies in South Korea is discussed on MBN’s “Koding Eomppa,” which draws criticism from viewers. The series’ primary goal was to increase public awareness of newborn education.
As soon as the first teaser for the series was released in February 2022, South Korean internet users immediately began to criticise it harshly. On the other hand, some joked that this show was just a ploy to boost the nation’s declining birthrate.
MBN continued to run its inaugural programme on March 6 in spite of all the criticism, disproving all preconceived notions about it.Instead of being about entertainment or sensations, the show mostly highlighted the difficult lives of teen parents.
Haleem Adil Sheikh, the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, had a motion for physical remand in a case involving land grabbing dismissed by a judge on Tuesday.

ABU DHABI: Abullah al-Hammadi, a meteorological officer for the United Arab Emirates, looks at weather charts on computer displays as a twin-turboprop plane takes off in the blazing desert sun with dozens of salt canisters strapped to its wings.
The plane shoots salt flares into the most promising white clouds at 9,000 feet in an attempt to bring down rain.According to Hamadi, director of rain enhancement activities at the National Centre for Meteorology in the UAE, “cloud seeding requires the availability of rainy clouds, and this is an issue as it is not always the case.”
The UAE has relied on expensive desalination plants that use seawater because of the effects of climate change, a growing population, and an economy that is diversifying into tourism and other sectors.

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations (UN) appealed to the world community on Tuesday for $160 million in emergency aid to help flood victims in Pakistan.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated via video link during the 2022 Pakistan Floods Response Plan (FRP) event that the floods had destroyed infrastructure in the affected areas of Pakistan and that the country was in desperate need of international assistance to help those affected by the heavy rains and floods.
He stated that Pakistan requires $160 million in relief for flood victims, and that greenhouse emissions are contributing to global warming.
During the ceremony, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also appealed for emergency assistance to Pakistan during these times of distress.
Due to climate change, heat waves have broken all records in Pakistan and now the country is facing heavy rainfall and flooding, he said.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairperson said more than 30 million people in 72 districts of the country are currently affected by the catastrophe, while systems of communication and crops have been destroyed and the economy has taken a significant hit.
“It’s a great challenge to provide food, a roof, and rehabilitation to the victims,” Bilalwal said, adding that the Benazir Income Support Programme has also been assisting impacted families.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal will also speak at the ceremony as the chairperson of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s “Relief Coordination Committee.”
“The FRP was developed in close collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority” (NDMA). Lt. Gen. Akhtar Nawaz, Chairman of the NDMA, will also brief the session,” said the FO in an earlier statement.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UN Resident Coordinator in Islamabad, and the Assistant Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will also speak at the event.United Nations

KENSINGTON SPACE CENTER: In a setback to its plan to return people to the Moon and eventually Mars, NASA has cancelled a test flight of its potent new rocket. However, it may try again on Friday.
After Monday’s mission from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center was postponed due to an engine problem, NASA administrator Bill Nelson remarked, “We don’t launch until it’s right.”
Nelson remarked, “This is a highly complex machine. “You shouldn’t ignite the candle until it is prepared to burn,” she said.
The 322-foot (98-meter) Space Launch System (SLS) rocket will be tested as part of the mission, which has been given the name Artemis 1 after Apollo’s twin sister.
ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Tuesday that recent flash floods have affected roughly 33 million people in the country and emphasised the importance of collaboration among the government, foreign community, and United Nations donor agencies to face the great challenge.
During a joint press conference with UN Resident Coordinator Julien Harneis here at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the foreign minister stated that rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts were underway throughout the country.
Govt
Following the initial assessment of the tragedy, Bilawal stated that the globe, the UN, and partner organisations needed to take immediate action to deal with the severity of the crisis.
He said Pakistan, this monsoon, received three times of the usual rainfall that resulted in floods affecting 23 districts of Sindh and 30 districts of Balochistna, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa and South Punjab.
He mentioned that there was a shortage of tents and food items to meet the demands of the flood-affected people and vowed to ensure transparency in disbursement of relief supply items.
He stated that draining of water was a major difficulty in flood-inundated low-lying areas, and that evacuation were taking place despite limited resources.
He stated that the international community’s cooperation would assist Pakistan in overcoming the tremendous issue. He commended the UN and its organisations for coordinating relief efforts with the government of Pakistan.
He also mentioned the Pakistani people’s and civil society’s extraordinary compassion in mobilising humanitarian efforts.
The foreign minister stated that there was still a long way to go in terms of effective disaster relief and rescue.
In response to a question on the capacity to cope with the challenge, he stated that collaborative efforts at the federal, provincial, and international levels will solve the problem.
Bilawal recalled that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a Rs 15 billion grant during his visit to Sindh. The money, he said, would not be sufficient in light of the destruction, but would supplement the provincial government’s efforts.
When asked about the lack of cooperation between the federal and provincial administrations, Bilawal emphasised the need of data availability under the Benazir Income Support System in carrying out assistance initiatives.
The foreign minister stated that now was not the time to play politics over the floods. He did, however, point out that flood-affected people in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa were awaiting repatriation, while the provincial government was preoccupied with catering to their leader Imran Khan’s helicopter ride.
He said the problem of current floods had compounded the issues pertaining to national economy that already faced the pressure of inflation.
Bilawal expressed confidence that the coalition government despite immense challenges would effectively deal with the challenges.
The UN Resident Coordinator, who also visited Sindh and Balochistan, voiced worry about the displacement of hundreds of people and stated that the UN would assist flood victims.
He stated that Pakistan could not solve this difficulty on its alone and requested the international community’s assistance in this regard.
Climate change, he claimed, has contributed to “mega floods” in Pakistan and that a clear strategy was needed to address the problem.
According to Julien Harneis, the monies raised through the international appeal would go toward health and emergency services, as well as livestock immunisation.Govt
He stated that the United Nations’ humanitarian response facilities would supplement Pakistan’s own capabilities to deal with the crisis.Govt
He said the UN had initiated collaboration with the local authorities, including the dispensation of supplies amounting $3 billion for water and livestock vaccination in Lasbela, Balochistan.
The UN official stated that he had met with the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and that the UN would respond if additional support was required.Govt

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday emphasised “breaking the economic straitjacket” through structural changes while declaring the renewal of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme crucial to Pakistan’s economy.
IMF
Shehbaz Sharif stated in a tweet that the initiative gave a means to re-orient Pakistan’s economy, but that they would have to work hard to become self-sufficient.
“Revival of program, though critical to our economy, is not an end in itself. It offers a pathway to reorient our economy. We will have to work hard to make it self-sufficient,” he said.
“Pakistan must break out of the economic straitjacket, which is only possible through structural reforms.”
His remarks come a day after the IMF board approved the seventh and eighth assessments of Pakistan’s bailout programme, releasing more than $1.1 billion to the country’s cash-strapped economy.
The IMF agreed to prolong the programme by a year and increase total funding by 720 million SDRs, or nearly $940 million at current exchange rates.
According to the planning minister, the monies would be a lifeline for the country, which has been devastated by terrible floods that have caused at least $10 billion in damage. IMF Deputy Managing Director Antoinette Sayeh said in a statement that adhering to scheduled hikes in fuel levies and energy rates is “important” because Pakistan’
economy “has been buffeted by unfavourable external conditions.”
