The business of hackers-for-hire threat actors

[ad_1]

Hackers-for-hire specialize in compromising email boxes. Learn more about these cyber criminals and the threat they represent.

In the world of illegal cyber activities, different kinds of threat actors exist. It has become increasingly common to read about companies selling offensive services like spyware as a service or commercial cyber surveillance. Some other actors are also government-backed. Yet another category of threat actors exists, dubbed hackers-for-hire.

Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) published a new report about this kind of threat and how it works, providing examples of this ecosystem from India, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.

SEE: Password breach: Why pop culture and passwords don’t mix (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

Who are hackers-for-hire?

Hackers-for-hire are experts in conducting accounts compromises (generally mailboxes) and exfiltrating data as a service. They sell their services to people who do not have the skills or capabilities to do so.

While some companies openly advertise their services to anyone who pays, others stay under the radar and only sell their services to a limited audience.

Some hackers-for-hire structures also work with third parties, generally private investigation services, which act as proxy between the customer and the threat actor. It might also happen that such a hack-for-hire company decides to work with freelance experienced people, avoiding to directly employ them.

Indian hackers-for-hire

Google’s TAG chose to share details about Indian hack-for-hire companies and indicates that they are tracking an interwoven set of Indian hack-for-hire actors, with many having previously worked for Indian offensive security companies Appin Security and Belltrox (Figure A).

TAG could link former employees of these two companies to Rebsec, a new company openly advertising for corporate espionage on its commercial website (Figure B).

Russian hackers-for-hire

A Russian hack-for-hire group has been tracked by the TAG team since 2017 and has targeted journalists, politicians, and various NGOs and non-profit organizations in addition to everyday citizens in Russia and surrounding countries.

In those attack campaigns, the threat actor used credential phishing emails that looked similar no matter the target. The phishing pages to which the victims were led could impersonate Gmail and other webmail providers or Russian government organizations.

A public website, gone since 2018, provided more information and advertised for the service, which consisted of compromising email boxes or social media accounts (Figure C).

Image: Archive.org. Figure C: Sample prices for the services of a Russian hack-for-hire actor.

As often in the Russian cyber criminal underground, the threat actor also highlighted positive reviews of its services from different well-known cyber criminal marketplaces such as Probiv.cc or Dublikat.

The United Arab Emirates hackers-for-hire

One hacker-for-hire group tracked by TAG is mostly active in the Middle East and North African area, targeting government, education and political organizations, including Middle East-focused NGOs in Europe and the Palestinian political party Fatah.

That actor mainly used Google or Outlook Web Access (OWA) password reset lures to steal valid credentials from their targets, using a custom phishing toolkit utilizing Selenium, a tool useful for automating tasks in web browsers.

Once compromised, persistence would be maintained by granting an OAuth token to a legitimate email client such as Thunderbird or by linking the victim Gmail account to another email account owned by the threat actor.

Interestingly enough, this threat actor could be linked to the original developer of the infamous njRAT malware, also known as Bladabindi, H-Worm or Houdini-Worm.

Who are hackers-for-hire targets?

Most common targets for these kinds of operations are political activists, journalists, human rights activists and other high-risk users around the world.

Companies, lawyers and attorneys are also at risk since some hackers-for-hire are hired to target them ahead of anticipated lawsuits or during litigation. They might also be targeted for corporate espionage and theft of industrial secrets.

Finally, any citizen can be targeted, since some hackers-for-hire structures offer low prices to compromise and provide access to any individual, typically a husband or a spouse who wants to find information about ongoing affairs and such.

How to protect from hackers-for-hire?

Most of these threat actors actually use email phishing as a starting point and generally do not go further than email box compromise and data exfiltration, which means they do not necessarily need any malware but rather use social engineering tricks.

SEE: Mobile device security policy (TechRepublic Premium)

Awareness needs to be raised on email phishing and related fraud attempts. Multi-factor authentication should also be deployed when possible to add a layer of security against those attackers.

Google recommends high-risk users to enable Advanced Protection and Google Account Level Enhanced Safe Browsing and ensure all devices are updated.

Finally, no one should ever authenticate to a web page popping up from a click on an email link. The user should always navigate to the legitimate page of the service and authenticate there without using any link.

Alvaro Morata’s journey at Juventus has come to an end, according to a statement from the Italian team

image 9

MILAN: Alvaro Morata’s loan at Juventus expires on Thursday, and the Serie A club has announced that he will return to Atletico Madrid.

The two clubs were unable to reach an agreement that would have allowed the forward from Spain to stay in Italy longer, so he will leave Turin.

Alvaro Morata’s journey at Juventus has come to an end, according to a statement from the Italian team.

The Spanish forward who spent the previous two seasons playing on loan from Atletico Madrid departs the Bianconeri for the second time and rejoins the Colchoneros.

After being loaned out to Juve by Atletico in 2020, Morata was in his second stint there, winning the Italian Cup and tallying 32 goals across all competitions.

He previously represented the team from 2014 to 2016, during which time he won two league and cup doubles and advanced to the Champions League final in 2015.

The 29-year-old expressed his desire to remain in Turin and expressed his happiness at Juventus.

In a farewell message posted to Instagram, Morata said, “Having the chance to wear this shirt is one of the best things that has ever happened to me.”

‘Stranger Things 4’ volume 2 expectations: Cast and producers open up

image 8

Every beginning has an ending, but with the end of our favorite teen show so near, it’s getting scarier to hold on to hope. Knowing that the fifth season will be the final one and that there won’t be a new season to look forward to after that is a looming feeling as the fourth season draws to a close.
The fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things has surprised and alarmed viewers in equal measure, both with its tone and the length of the episodes. Fans had one and a half months to process everything that happened in the first volume, but now that the finale—one of the Volume 2 episodes—has been released, it’s time to give in.

The creators of the teen thriller, Matt and Ross Duffer, said there was no choice but to up the ante on the horror and include a detailed synopsis. There are good reasons for this.

The brother duo explained that the teen thriller’s core structure, which involves four separate storylines, justifies longer runtimes for its episodes in an interview with Variety. Matt remarked, “If you look at one of the episodes, you couldn’t cut it out 15 minutes early.”

Ross continued, using the finale as an illustration: “Reel one is build-up dread. The second reel is action and chaos. After all of that, reel three, which serves as our customary coda, should be played. Considering the anticipation alone, you didn’t really want to break it. The episode wouldn’t feel like it was satisfying. Therefore, we simply said, “Well, it’s just a mega episode,” at a certain point. Anyone can pause it if they want to!

Compared to me, my mother was more excited about Fawad’s appearance in “Ms. Marvel”: By Iman Vellani

image 7

Since its debut on Disney+, Ms. Marvel, the newest offering from Marvel, has become a huge hit. While the show has received praise for its fairly accurate portrayal of comics, many viewers were especially thrilled with the diverse cast.

Numerous South Asian actors are making their Marvel debuts with the show, including Farhan Akhtar from Bollywood and Fawad Khan from Pakistan.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the appearance of Fawad even though several Pakistani celebrities, including Nimra Bucha, Samina Ahmed, and Mehwish Hayat, have already made their first appearances in the show. The Humsafar actor makes his television debut as Hassan, Kamala Khan’s great-grandfather, in the fourth episode of the series.

However, did you know? Has Iman Vellani’s (Kamala Khan) mother joined the ranks of Fawad’s admirers? Iman previously discussed the joy her mother experienced upon learning that Fawad would also be appearing in Ms. Marvel. Iman said, “I grew up watching them [the actors] and then I was working with them,” when asked about working with a cast full of A-list celebrities. Added she, “My mother was more excited about Fawad than she was about me being on our show. I believe that sums it up.”

Reddit user: Banned Reddit user back after Alia Bhatt confirms pregnancy on Instagram

[ad_1]

Alia Bhatt recently announced on Instagram that she and hubby Ranbir Kapoor are expecting a baby. While the news came as a pleasant surprise for the power couple’s fans, it also led to unblocking of a Reddit account. Moderators of a popular Bollywood gossip sub-Reddit, BollyBlindsNGossip had to lift a ban on newbee_fun after the news.

In April 2022, newbee_fun had posted in the sub-Reddit that Alia Bhatt was pregnant. However, terming it as a ‘Quora Rumour’ part of an alleged ‘fan war, the moderators banned the user from their sub-Reddit. Following Alia’s announcement, the moderators had to lift the ban, and many Reddit users have demanded that newbee_fun must be awarded.

Newbee_fun, in her post, had said that her friend, a make-up artist, had informed her that Alia was pregnant. The post garnered condemnation, as many at the time termed it an ‘outrageous gossip’. The moderators were swift in tagging the news as fake and deleting it subsequently.

thinker: Auguste Rodin’s iconic ‘The Thinker’ sculpture fetches $ 11 mn at Paris auction

[ad_1]

PARIS: A casting of Auguste Rodin‘s ‘The Thinker‘ sculpture, one of the most iconic works of art in the world, sold for 10.7 million euros ($11.14 million) at a Paris auction on Thursday.

The auction house, Christie’s, had estimated the casting, one of roughly 40 authentic outstanding ones, would fetch between nine to 14 million euros. The record for a Rodin ‘Thinker’ was set at a Sotheby’s auction in New York in 2013, when one sold for $15.3 million.

When conceived by Rodin in 1880 in its original size of approximately 70 cm ‘The Thinker’ was called ‘The Poet’ and was designed to be the crowning element of ‘The Gates of Hell‘, another major work by the French sculptor.

The sculpture initially represented Dante, the medieval Italian poet and author of the Divine Comedy, leaning forward to observe the circles of Hell, while meditating on his work.

While remaining in place on the monumental Gates of Hell, The Thinker was exhibited individually in 1888 and thus became an independent work.

The statue was first enlarged in 1904, and monumental man-sized versions of the statue such as the one on display in the Paris Rodin Museum proved even more popular, with its the image of a man lost in thought but whose powerful body suggests a great capacity for action.

The copy sold this Thursday by Christie’s was the size of the original model.

Tessa Thompson opens up about her character in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

[ad_1]

Tessa Thompson has now spoken about her character in the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder which has already created a huge buzz on the internet.

As the release of the much-awaited Marvel sequel inches closer, the cast of the film is sharing their experience of working with the characters on set.

Amid all, Tessa in a recent interview opened up about her character Valkyrie and how her growth was taken care of in this instalment of the franchise.

While talking to Yahoo Entertainment, via ComicBook, Thompson revealed that Valkyrie’s sexuality will be a major plot point in the film.

She shared, “It becomes the only storyline, particularly in a movie like this, where you don’t, frankly, have a lot of room for the storyline,” referring to the short runtime of the film.

She added, “So there was a lot of conversation in terms of how to treat that with Valkyrie. And I feel really good, personally, about where we got to. I hope that she’s a character that fans continue to connect to, that we have a lot of time to explore her, in all of her humanity.”

However, Thompson disclosed that Valkyrie might not end up with a romantic match which according to her is not the point of the plot at all.

She explained, “But whether or not she finds love in this movie doesn’t mean she’s not still a fabulous queer character that is open to finding love when it makes sense.”

As for romance in the film, Valkyrie is not the only one being wrapped in pink shades as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is all set to reunite with his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster in the film. Though Foster has some surprises of her own as she now appears in Thor’s life wielding his hammer, Mjolnir.

Throwback: When Janhvi Kapoor expressed desire to wake up as Vijay Deverakonda one day on Koffee With Karan S6

[ad_1]

Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor is the new-age actress, who is raising the bar high in Bollywood and also grabbing eyeballs in Tollywood. While rumours of her South debut make way every now and then, let’s have a flashback to when the Bollywood diva opened up about her admiration for Tollywood heartthrob Vijay Deverakonda and also wished to work with him someday.

In an episode of Koffee With Karan Season 6, actress and daughter of Sridevi, Jahnvi Kapoor said that she wants to act with Vijay Deverakonda. During the rapid-fire round, host Karan Johar asked Jahnvi if she was to wake up one day as a male actor, who would that be, she said, “Vijay Deverakonda. I think he is extremely talented and I would immediately do a film with myself.”

Watch the video here:

In an other interview with Neha Dhupia, Janhvi got candid about her liking towards Vijay Deverakonda and stated that he is her all-time crush and she admires him a lot. However, she also emphasised that this crush is one-sided at the moment. “The status is non-existent, unfortunately. I feel like I have put out a lot of feelers but there is no response. I’m kidding. It’s just admiration. I’m comfortable if the admiration is, I guess one-sided, at this point,” the actress was quoted saying.

There were also many rumours of her Tollywood debut opposite Vijay Deverakonda but they just remained like rumours as none came true. Well, let’s hope, Janhvi and Vijay team up some time as the diva wants and they sure would be a delight to watch. Good looks and sizzling chemistry will set the screen on fire.

Riot Games moves LoL Worlds Semi-Finals from Toronto to Atlanta

[ad_1]

Games publisher Riot Games has announced that this year’s League of Legends World Championship will change its semi-finals host city from Toronto to Atlanta.

Originally set to take place at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, Riot said the relocation is due to COVID-19 impacting the viability of securing multi-entry visas to the United States.

As a result, the semi-finals will instead take place at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, the home of NBA team Atlanta Hawks.

The 2022 World Championship is set to take place later this year in North America across four host cities — Mexico City, Atlanta, New York and San Francisco.

With these changes, Riot Games has claimed the move will provide teams with a ‘clear path’ to complete at all stages of the event.

Naz Aletaha, Global Head of LoL Esports, Riot Games, commented: “We are committed to upholding our tradition of a multi-city Worlds tour despite the challenges presented by the pandemic and look forward to hosting the 2022 Semifinals at the state-of-the-art State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

“This news is no doubt disappointing to our fans and partners in Canada, and we want to sincerely thank Toronto, Scotiabank Arena, and our community for their understanding. We look forward to bringing a major LoL Esports event there in the future.”

Visa access for players is a problem that has plagued esports for years.

Perhaps a notable example was Dota 2’s 2021 The International having to relocate from Sweden to Romania due to the Swedish Sports Federation voting to not accept esports into the federation. This meant that anyone attempting to procure a visa for travel into Sweden for the event would be denied.

Esports betting odds provider Oddin.gg has partnered with crypto casino operator Duelbits for its recently-launched sportsbook.

According to the release, the esports division of Duelbits’ sportsbooks will receive Oddin.gg’s esports odds feed and risk management services.

First established as a crypto casino, Duelbits recently made the move to open up a sportsbook division. Made possible by the partnership, Duelbits has decided to implement esports into its sportsbook almost immediately, with Oddin.gg as its odds provider of choice.

Some of the titles included in Duelbit’s esports sportsbook offerings are League of Legends, CS:GO and Dota 2. Moreover, mobile esports title Honor of Kings, as well as Rocket League and Starcraft 2, also have odds available.

Marek Suchar, Oddin.gg’s Co-Founder and Managing Director of Oddin.gg, highlighted the synergy between crypto and esports and the traits shared by both audiences. Oddin.gg said the deal puts it at the intersection of esports and crypto, a move it hopes will focus it on the big picture of tomorrow.”

Duelbits joins Oddin.gg’s ever-growing partnership portfolio, with the likes of Betway, Esports Entertainment Group and Centre of Betting Vietnam, among others, teaming up with the odds provider this year.

Ross Haffie, Head of Sportsbook, Duelbits CEO, commented: “At Duelbits, our brand motto is ‘It’s time to get more’. We were hatched during the pandemic when operators were starving for alternative content. In such a competitive industry, it’s vital for operators to provide users with the best offers and the best product.

“Esports as cryptos are the new frontier, although they are still surrounded by a lot of scepticism. By selecting Oddin.gg out of a long list of candidates, we are confident we will get exactly this: more options and more fun for our bettors, and more possibilities for us to grow our business.”

She has advanced so much as an actor: Ranbir Kapoor heaps praise on Deepika Padukone

image 6

Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor, both Bollywood actors and famous exes, have always maintained friendly relations with one another even after their divorce. The onscreen couple, who debuted in Bollywood in 2007 – Kapoor in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya and Padukone in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om – have come a long way.

The duo has also collaborated on several projects, including Bachna Ae Haseeno and Tamasha. In an interview with Brut India, the Sanju actor praised his ex-girlfriend and co-star Deepika Padukone. Kapoor discussed a scene from Tamasha’s song Agar Tum Sath Ho.

“(It) was championed by Deepika’s performance,” Kapoor said of how the scene belonged to the Ram Leela star. Certain scenes lend themselves to an actor’s character, and this one did because my character was churning and going through something.”

“But I think what Deepika brought to the table, she made it come alive because you really felt pain,” he continued. As a result, the scene was extremely reactive. She was reacting to what I was doing, and I was reacting to what she was doing.”

The actor also discussed his relationship with Deepika, saying the two “always had such a good time working.” He stated that she had “grown so much as an actor.”

Kanye West has filed a lawsuit against Apple for allegedly using an illegal sample in “Donda 2.”

image 4

Kanye West, a rapper, producer, and businessman who legally changed his name to Ye last year, was accused of illegally sampling a song by Marshall Jefferson on Wednesday.

From West’s album Donda 2, the song “Flowers,” which features a sample from Move Your Body by Jefferson from 1986, according to Ultra International Music Publishing LLC, is repeated at least 22 times.

West’s label Universal Music Group (UMG.AS), which is not a party to the lawsuit, as well as a representative for West did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The company that owns the rights to Jefferson’s song, Ultra International, through an attorney, stated that it had no further comment and thought the lawsuit spoke for itself.

Chicago-born Jefferson is credited with creating house music. West is his hometown. In discussions with Jefferson, it was acknowledged by West and his agents, according to the lawsuit, that Flowers had sampled Move Your Body without authorization. But the lawsuit claims that those discussions did not result in a license.

Donda 2 was exclusively made available by West through his Stem Player, a portable device that enables users to separate and reassemble song parts, in February. A request for comment was not immediately answered by Kano Computing Ltd, a British business that developed the Stem Player with West and is also mentioned in the lawsuit.

Google will pay $90 million to app developers to end their legal dispute

image 3

WASHINGTON: According to a court filing, Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has agreed to pay $90 million to end a legal dispute with app developers over the money they made from creating apps for Android mobile devices and convincing users to buy in-app items.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court in San Francisco, the app developers alleged that Google was closing the app ecosystem and diverting the majority of payments through its Google Play billing system with a default service fee of 30% by using contracts with smartphone manufacturers, technical barriers, and revenue sharing agreements.

Google announced in a blog post that it would contribute $90 million to a fund to assist app developers who earned $2 million or less in annual revenue as part of the proposed settlement.

The majority of US developers who made money through Google Play will be qualified to receive funds from this fund, if they so choose, according to Google’s blog post

Google also announced that it would charge developers a 15 percent commission on the first million dollars of sales they make through the Google Play Store annually. In 2021, it first started doing this.

The proposed settlement must be accepted by the court.

The $90 million funds was open to 48,000 app developers, and the minimum payout is $250, according to Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, who acted as the plaintiffs’ legal counsel.

Players prepared for the World Cup table

image 2

NANTES: This week in western France, more than 1,000 table football players are competing in a World Cup while wearing athletic clothing and using special hand grips for added strength.

The six-day competition offers the chance for organizers to push for the game’s international recognition as a sport in addition to the bragging rights for the winners.

Table football is typically thought of as a bit of fun because it is typically played in bars or outside, and it frequently involves drinking, smoking, and shouting.
However, the World Cup in Nantes has brought together the most devoted supporters from all over the world who see it as more than just casual interludes with friends.

The head of the International Table Soccer Federation, based in France, Farid Lounas, said of the event, “It’s a wonderful competition, but it’s not just a race for the medals.”
The main goal, he continued, is to institutionalize this discipline that fosters interpersonal interaction and that, by requiring only a table, transcends social class.

From diverse nations like Japan, Iran, and the United States, many players have flown great distances to attend.

As Bitcoin drops below $19,000, the cryptocurrency markets are further rattled

image 1

At 2004 GMT on Thursday, Bitcoin was down 6.1 percent to $18,866.77, down $1,226.41 from its previous close and down 60.9 percent from the year’s high of $48,234 on March 28. The largest and most well-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin.

The cryptocurrency markets have seen difficulties from a number of major players, and further declines may force other investors to sell holdings to meet margin calls and cover losses.

The price of Ether, the cryptocurrency connect to the Ethereum blockchain, fell by $82.38 on Thursday to close at $1,016.08.
Since US-based lender Celsius Network announced this month that it would stop accepting withdrawals, both digital assets have struggled. The apparent insolvency of cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, which a person with knowledge of the situation told Reuters has entered liquidation, further shook bitcoin and ether.

The spectacular collapse of the so-called stablecoin TerraUSD in May, which resulted in the stablecoin and its paired token losing nearly all of their value, can be blamed for many of the industry’s recent issues.

The US approves Starlink internet from SpaceX for use with aircraft, boats, and ships

image

WASHINGTON: The US Federal Communications Commission approved Elon Musk’s SpaceX plan to expand its broadband services to commercial airlines, ships, and trucks on Thursday by allowing the company to use with moving vehicles, its Starlink satellite internet network.

Starlink has long sought to expand its customer base from individual broadband users in remote, internet-poor locations to enterprise customers in the potentially lucrative automotive, shipping, and airline sectors. Starlink is a rapidly expanding constellation of internet-beaming satellites in orbit.

In its authorization, which was published on Thursday, the FCC echoed statements made in SpaceX’s request for approval from early last year. According to the FCC, approving a new class of terminals for SpaceX’s satellite system will increase the range of broadband capabilities to meet users’ growing demands for connectivity while they are in motion.

Enthusiast Gaming, the publicly traded parent company of Luminosity Gaming, has received a letter from staff requesting the resignation of its CEO Adrian Montgomery.

According to reporting by The Washington Post, the letter was written by four VP-level executives who claimed the publicly traded company’s strategic vision, staffing issues particularly within human resources and equity distribution were evidence of Montgomery’s mismanagement.

Current Enthusiast leadership, specifically Chief Corporate Officer Eric Bernofsky, countered these concerns in a statement to The Post. Bernofsky communicated its commitment to employees and pointed to the company’s “dramatically improved” financial performance and standing in the public markets.

This letter echoes a public campaign by Enthusiast Gaming’s largest shareholder, Greywood Investments, to replace Montgomery and the board of directors with its own nominees. The investment group owns 9.3% of Enthusiast, while the board of directors own 5.7% most of which was gifted, not paid for.

A spokesperson for Greywood told The Post that it had no involvement in the letter from Enthusiast’s staff. However, both the campaign and employees are pointing to misaligned economic interests between themselves and the board.

Greywood believes that the board’s lack of cash investment and overcompensation of the CEO are leading to decisions that are not benefitting the long-term health and prospects of Enthusiast. Similarly, employees questioned the decision to award 80% of restricted stock units (RSUs) to the board and c-suite executives rather than other employees.

Past layoffs are likely contributing to the conflict between employees and management as well. In March, editorial staff were slashed at Upcomer, Enthusiast’s esports and gaming news site. In a report by Digiday, most of the laid-off staff were denied promised annual bonuses and asked to sign NDAs before being able to receive one to three weeks of severance.

The end of Q2 is imminent and financial filings are expected by mid-August. These documents will likely fuel the next conflict in the ongoing proxy war for control of Enthusiast’s board.

The World Bank’s board of directors approved the establishment of a fund on Thursday to finance investments in improving the fight against pandemics. According to the bank, the fund would support prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR), with a focus on low- and middle-income countries.

“The terrible human, economic, and societal costs of COVID-19 have underlined the urgent need for coordinated action to strengthen health systems and mobilise additional resources,” the report stated.

The World Bank went on to say that the fund, which it hopes to launch later this year, was created under the leadership of the United States, Italy, and Indonesia as part of their G20 presidencies, and with wide G20 support.

The United States Supreme Court has limited the government’s ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

WASHINGTON – The United States Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the government’s major environmental agency cannot declare sweeping limitations on greenhouse gases, severely limiting President Joe Biden’s administration’s ability to combat climate change.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Environmental Protection Agency lacked the authority to impose wide limits on emissions from coal-fired power plants, which provide about 20% of the electricity consumed in the United States.

The decision dashes Biden’s ambitions of utilising the EPA to reduce emissions in order to reach global climate objectives set in 2015 under the Paris Climate Agreement.

It was a huge victory for the coal mining and coal power industries, which had been targeted for strict limits by then-President Barack Obama’s administration in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.

The Taliban’s first national gathering since taking power focused on girls’ education

KABUL — Religious and ethnic leaders from across Afghanistan debated girls’ education at a session organised by Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers on Thursday — but no women were present.

It was the first such gathering since the Taliban gained control of Afghanistan last August after Western forces retreated, a power shift that sparked international worry about a reduction in women’s rights.

In March, the Taliban reversed their declaration that girls’ high schools would open, claiming they would remain closed until a plan based on Islamic law was developed to reopen them.

Sayed Nassrullah Waizi of central Bamiyan province, who attended the Kabul meeting, said girls should be allowed to attend high school.

However, it was unclear how much support this feeling would receive or how the situation would be resolved.

The Taliban’s spokesman stated that the party would respect whatever decision those present made on females’ education, but that the final decision would be made by Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhunzada.

How likely is it that Hamza would keep his CM seat following the vote recount?

[ad_1]

What are Hamza Shahbaz’s chances of regaining the Punjab chief ministership following today’s (Friday) Punjab Assembly session vote recount?

The Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered a recount of the ballots cast in the April 16 election of Punjab chief minister while excluding the votes of the PTI’s 25 dissident MPAs to determine whether Hamza still has a majority without the backing of the dissidents.
The move of the dissident lawmakers violated Article 63 A(1)(b) of the Constitution. Hamza Shehbaz received 197 votes, including 25 from PTI dissidents, four from independents, and one from the Pakistan Rah-e-Haq Party (PRHP) MPA. During the April 16 Punjab chief minister election, five rebel PML-N lawmakers voted against Hamza.

The magic number needed to demonstrate majority is 186.

According to the LHC’s decision, after recounting the votes today, Hamza Shehbaz’s tally will be reduced to 172 votes due to the deletion of 25 votes cast by PTI dissident lawmakers.
In this situation, re-election would be held under Article 130(4) of the Constitution, which states that in this second round of voting, a member does not need a majority of 186 votes to be chosen as chief minister, but just more votes than any other candidate.

SC fixes plea of dissident PTI MPAs for hearing on July 5

On July 5, the Supreme Court (SC) will hear the petition of 25 dissident PTI members of the Punjab Assembly against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to de-notify them.

25 PTI dissident members who voted for Hamza Shahbaz in the Punjab chief minister election filed a petition against the ECP decision.

Following MPAs voting against party policy, the ECP de-seated the 25 PTI dissidents on May 20.
According to sources, the matter will now be heard by a three-member SC panel led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on July 5, along with Justice Ameen ud din Khan and Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar.

According to sources, the Supreme Court has sent notices to all respondents.

The votes of dissident MPs will not be counted.
Previously, the Supreme Court (SC) held that votes cast by dissident members of Parliament (MPs) against the directions of their parliamentary party could not be counted.

In its decision on the presidential referral seeking an interpretation of Article 63(A) of the Constitution regarding defecting MPs, the court stated that the statute cannot be understood in isolation.

Imran Khan might face treason charges for breaking the constitution

ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb warned on Thursday that former Prime Minister Imran Khan could face treason charges for attempting to avoid his departure by abrogating Pakistan’s constitution.

During a press conference, Aurangzeb stated that, according to the Supreme Court’s decision, Imran Khan breached the constitution when he faced a no-confidence motion because the then-Deputy Speaker had unconstitutionally ruled out the vote of no-confidence against him.

She was referring to PTI leader and former deputy speaker of the National Assembly (NA) Qasim Suri’s decision to reject the no-trust motion against then-prime minister Imran Khan, which the Supreme Court ruled was illegal and restored the NA.
The federal minister went on to claim that Imran Khan has been requesting neutrals to intervene on a regular basis, and that “this is a violation of Article 6 for violating the Constitution.

Aurangzeb slammed the PTI’s claim of a foreign conspiracy, saying that if Imran Khan had received the cypher on March 8, why didn’t he launch an investigation by establishing a commission?
“If Imran Khan had known about the scheme, he should have constituted a commission,” she claimed, “but he did not hold [an] inquiry since it was a plain falsehood.”

The COVID-19 positive ratio in the country increased a 4.5-month high of 3.93 percent in the last 24 hours, according to statistics from the National Institute of Health, Islamabad (NIH).

Since February 19, when it was 4.15 percent, this is the greatest positive ratio recorded.

According to the most recent NIH data, 694 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the country during the last 24 hours following diagnostic testing on 17,640 samples.
According to NIH data, 101 COVID-19 patients are currently being treated in various medical facilities across the country.

Fortunately, no deaths have been reported in the recent 24 hours across the country as a result of the infection.
As the number of COVID cases rises, the government decides to ‘fully activate’ the NCOC.
The federal government decided earlier this week to “fully activate” the National Command and Operation Centre because to the huge spike in COVID-19 cases (NCOC).

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed worry about the rising number of COVID-19 cases and directed that Pakistan’s coronavirus response forum be reactivated.

To keep the hazardous virus at bay, the premier instructed district and provincial officials to strictly enforce protective measures and take other safeguards.

Karachi’s weather improved as portions of the city received rain in the early hours of Friday, as predicted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Rain fell at Saddar, II Chundrigar Road, Sharae Faisal, and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

According to the top meteorologist, Dr Sardar Sarfaraz, the weather in Karachi will be partly cloudy today (Friday) and tomorrow, with a risk of light rain today.
The intensity of the first monsoon phase will remain greater in Sindh, however severe gusts of up to 81 kilometres per hour may blow.”

He went on to say that if the monsoon system only faintly touches Karachi before passing through, 50-70mm of rain could occur, but if the system’s centre goes through Karachi, more than 100mm of rain could fall.
Dr Sardar Sarfaraz, Chief Meteorologist at the Pakistan Meteorological Department, stated a day earlier that Karachi could get heavy intermittent rain beginning on the evening or night of July 2.

He stated that winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea entered Sialkot and Narowal last night and will enter the upper section of the country with increased strength today.

According to Dr. Sarfaraz, the city is in great danger of flooding.

He warned fisherman that there will be large tidal waves from July 3 to 5, so they should exercise caution when heading into the sea

PTI requests a seven-day extension before re-election of Punjab Chief Minister

[ad_1]

PTI has sought an extension of seven days before the process of re-election of the Punjab chief minister during the hearing of a plea in the Supreme Court in another attempt to remove Hamza Shahbaz from the post of Punjab chief minister. The party petitioned the Supreme Court (SC) to overturn the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) order to perform a vote recount in the April 16 CM election. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court accepted the petition for an instant hearing and convened a three-member bench.

electon 1

The bench, led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, is currently hearing the case. The LHC dismissed the PTI’s case against Hamza’s election in a 4-1 split judgement.CM’s seat, while ordering a recount of votes cast during the Punjab chief executive’s election but with 25 PTI dissidents’ votes excluded, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s interpretation of Article 63. (A).

PTI leader Babar Awan came before the court at the start of the session, while PTI’s attorney attended via video link. Beginning his arguments, Awan informed the court that all of the PTI legislators are not in Lahore since some are performing Hajj and others are attending family festivities. When this was mentioned, Justice Ijazul Ahsan stated that he does not agree with waiting before voting if any member is missing. The judge adjourned the hearing to 2:45 p.m. after hearing PTI’s arguments.

The petition requests an urgent hearing on the petition, as well as the removal of Hamza Shahbaz from the role of Punjab Chief Minister and the suspension of the recounting process until a decision on the petition is reached. PTI has maintained in its petition that the LHC’s order should be changed and that ample time be allowed to inform all lawmakers in order to assure their attendance at the Punjab Assembly session, allowing for a free and fair election of the Punjab CM. Referring to the objection raised by LHC’s Justice Sajid Mehmood Sethi, the PTI sought to quash the notification issued for the appointment of Hamza Shahbaz as CM because he would no longer have the majority of votes under Article 130(4) of the Constitution if the votes of PTI dissidents were excluded.
