Senior journalist and columnist Ayaz Amir was allegedly attacked in Lahore on Friday night by unidentified assailants.

Ayaz, who worked for a regional TV station, was attacked as he was travelling from his office in the provincial capital to his home.

The senior columnist was assaulted, and his belongings, including his phone, were taken.

He claimed in a Twitter post that unidentified assailants attacked him, slapped him, tore his clothes, and stole his phone.

He claimed in another tweet that they were cowards who, if they had been courageous, would have come forward.

He declared that his only mistake was speaking the truth and promised to keep doing so in the future. “I appreciate your help. We must speak the truth and associate with the truthful, as Allah has commanded.

Sushmita Sen recalls her three nearly-married attempts before God intervened.

image 12

In a recent interview with actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna, beauty queen-turned-actor Sushmita Sen opened up about her life, career, and choice to remain single despite having been disappointed three times in her attempts to get married.

Sushmita, who has famously remained single and defied stereotypes by adopting at 24 years old back in the day, responded, “Khud ko khoya, toh kya paaya,” when asked how she was able to maintain her candour about her relationships at a time when men in the industry would pretend to be “virgins” (We gain nothing by losing ourselves). That has been my guiding principle in life. I simply wanted to learn how to speak my truth and be sincere while doing so… Get over it. Whether you think plastic surgery, having men in my life, relationships, or married men are bad things, they exist.

Fortunately, I’ve met some very interesting men in my life, and the only reason I haven’t wed is because they disappointed me. My children were not involved in any way. If anything, my kids have been very gracious considering that they were never considered. They have shown everyone in my life the same amount of love and respect and have welcomed them with open arms. Watching it is the most beautiful thing ever. I almost got married three times. I was rescued by God each time. I am unable to tell you what misfortunes affected each person’s life. God did indeed keep me safe, but also because God kept these two children safe, he cannot permit me to engage in a messy relationship.

On the set of her first movie, Dastak, Sushmita and director Mahesh Bhatt got into a fight. After the director persuaded her to make the switch to acting after winning Miss Universe in 1994, she was asked to play a version of herself in the movie. Sushmita revealed how Mahesh humiliated her in front of the whole crew, causing her to storm out in rage. But he later revealed to her that everything was a ruse to extract a performance from her.

Aamir Liaquat ought to have wed a devout woman: Rehman Khalil

image 11

Popular playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar believes that the late televangelist Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s choice to wed his third wife, Dania Shah, was a significant factor in his passing. The author of Meray Paas Tum Ho thinks that these effects should be anticipated when one marries a woman “like Dania.” He added that Hussain ought to have married Shah rather than a girl of the same religion.

When Qamar appeared on a local talk show, the host questioned him about whether or not he thought Shah was to blame for Hussain’s passing. Immediately after nodding, the author said, “Yes, we can say that she was accountable for his death. We men occasionally commit some atrocious errors. Personally, I think he ought to have married a devout, religious woman instead. If In my personal opinion, he should’ve married a pious, religious girl instead. If you marry such tough girls then bad results are inevitable.”

Following her husband’s unexpected death, Shah stated that she would observe iddat; however, on Wednesday, she shared a video of herself in which she is seen attending DG Khan Darbar with her mother.

Hussain released a video lamenting the viral clips earlier this year after Shah leaked ‘indecent’ videos of him. The television personality offered his opinion on the subject and said that, as a result of “indecent” videos going viral on social media, he is forced to leave the country.

Do you aspire to be an astronaut? This is why it might not be a good idea

image 10

According to a recent study, astronauts who stay in space for longer than three months may experience severe bone loss that lasts longer than a year and is irreversible.

Scientific Reports published a study titled “Incomplete recovery of bone strength and trabecular microarchitecture at the distal tibia 1 year after return from long-duration spaceflight.”

In a microgravity environment, astronauts’ bones do not have to support any weight.

The report’s opening sentence read, “The damaging effects of spaceflight on skeletal tissue can be profound.”

While it was known previously that zero gravity causes bone damage, the new study shows that longer spaceflights can result in damage that is hard to recover till up to a full year.

The lead author of the study, Leigh Gabel, assistant professor in Kinesiology, told Eureka Alert that the “weight-bearing bones only partially recovered in most astronauts one year after spaceflight.”

“This suggests permanent bone loss due to spaceflight is about the same as a decade worth of age-related bone loss on Earth,” the study said.

The new study demonstrates that longer spaceflights can result in damage that is difficult to recover from for up to a full year, despite the fact that bone damage in zero gravity has long been known to occur.

According to Eureka Alert’s interview with Leigh Gabel, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor of kinesiology, “weight-bearing bones only partially recovered in most astronauts one year after spaceflight.”

According to the study, “this suggests permanent bone loss due to spaceflight is roughly equal to a decade’s worth of age-related bone loss on Earth.”

17 astronauts were examined both before and after spaceflights as part of a 2017 study to determine how bones respond to extended spaceflights.

XIII Remake is getting another remake with a September release date

[ad_1]

Cult classic XIII received an HD remake in 2020 from developer PlayMagic. The project attempted to update the game for modern platforms, but it fell more than a little short. Which is why, just two years later, publisher Microids has announced that it has handed the game over to a new studio to give XIII Remake a remake of its own.

The re-remade version of the game is set for release on Sept. 13 as a free update for everyone who already owns the existing remake on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, Microids said in a news release this week. The long-delayed Nintendo Switch version will also arrive on that date.

Microids also listed some of the upgrades that new developer Tower Five is delivering, saying that the studio has “reworked the entire game”:

Refined art style

Enhanced A.I.

Reworked HUD

Revamped sound design

30fps framerate on Switch

60fps framerate on PS5/Xbox Series

Online multiplayer (2 to 13 players)

This remake shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, given XIII Remake’s extremely poor reception. Critics weren’t positive about the changes — it has a 33% average rating on Metacritic — and fans weren’t pleased either, giving it an “Overwhelmingly Negative” average review rating on Steam. On top of that, the remake was originally supposed to come out on Nintendo Switch.

Microids acknowledged the ways in which XIII Remake fell short of expectations.

“We are fully aware and terribly sorry that the initial launch of XIII Remake on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC did not reach players’ expected quality standards,” Microids CEO Stéphane Longeard said in a statement. “A bit more than a year ago we took the decision to hire the studio Tower Five to finish the development of the game. Tower Five worked with us in the past, notably on the great port of Agatha Christie: The ABC Murders on Nintendo Switch. We really wanted to take the time to fix the game and offer owners of XIII Remake a free update paying the best possible tribute to the original game we all love.”

The original version of XIII was released in 2003, and was loosely based on a graphic novel series of the same name. The game was developed by Southend Interactive and Ubisoft Paris.

You should not buy the base M2 MacBook Pro model

[ad_1]

The base model 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM is available to buy right now. You probably shouldn’t buy it. With more details coming out about just how slow it is compared to higher-specced versions of the M2 and even the M1 model, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the cheapest 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro is a real stinker of a deal.

Earlier this week, videos from Max Tech and Created Tech showed the storage in the base M2 model was slow compared to the M1 version, with 50 percent slower SSD read speeds and 30 percent slower write speeds. It’s because Apple opted to use just one 256GB NAND flash storage chip instead of two 128GB chips as found on the M1. The move, likely a cost-saving one, means none of the reading and writing can happen in parallel across two chips. Everything has to go through just the one, and that effectively throttles the otherwise high-octane M2 chip.

Now, Max Tech has tested the base 8GB RAM / 256GB storage model against the more expensive 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM, and yup, it’s slower than that laptop, too! That’s partially because the higher-specced device uses two 256GB NAND chips instead of one, so processes can run in parallel across the two chips. They’re likely the same NAND chips as found in the base model — further suggesting the slowdown is related to the decision to use just one NAND chip in the cheaper MacBook Pro.

But the slowdown is also due to the lack of RAM.

Apple’s Arm-based computer chips use unified memory. The GPU and CPU — everything — pulls from the same memory to get jobs done. In other M1 and M2 devices, 8GB of memory would not be ideal but wouldn’t lead to significant slowdowns. But part of the reason other M1 and M2 Macs can get away with only 8GB of memory is because they have super fast SSDs that the processor can use for memory in a pinch. But when you pair 8GB of RAM with the sluggish single NAND 256GB of storage, you get a laptop that regularly performs tasks at half the speed of its higher-end siblings that use the exact same processor.

For example, when Max Tech exported 50 42-megapixel images in Lightroom, the 8GB / 256GB MacBook Pro did the task in two minutes flat. The 16GB / 512GB MacBook Pro did it in one minute and seven seconds. That’s nearly double the speed just by using more RAM and faster storage.

The M2 MacBook Pro already feels sort of like a laptop in want of an audience. With the refreshed, better specced, and cheaper M2 MacBook Air weeks away, and M1 MacBook Pros on sale, it’s been hard to make a case for why anyone should buy the M2 MacBook Pro. It’s got great battery life (it took us over 16 hours of aggressive use to kill the battery), but at this point, that’s all it’s got going for it. If you really need the battery life promise of the M2 MacBook Pro, you should save up the extra cash to get the $1,499 version with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM.

But, I’ll be curious to see how many people opt for the perfectly good $1,499 model when this stinker of a base model exists. Historically, base models are the ones that sell the best, which means a lot of the people who want this weird machine are going to be flocking to the $1,299 base model despite the stunted performance. If, as Apple claims, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is the second bestselling laptop in the world, then the company is setting itself up for a big mess very soon.

Tekken’s history started under the name Kamui in 1994

[ad_1]

Before it was Tekken, Namco’s marquee fighting franchise went by the name Kamui, and a new video showcases the origins of how the series came about.

Over the past year, Bandai Namco has been putting out short history-lesson videos on classic games under its Namco Museum of Art brand on YouTube, covering games such as Galaxian and Xevious, and showcasing the artwork behind them. On Friday, it posted its latest video covering the origins of 1994’s Tekken.

Diving into the history of the PlayStation-based System 11 arcade hardware, the video talks about Tekken’s origins as a fighting game for the new hardware, showing early development footage reminiscent of Sega’s Virtua Fighter, with two simple-looking characters fighting in front of a wide-open background.

Where the video gets especially interesting is it includes a number of shots of old sketches and design documents for the project, both when it was known as Kamui — showing characters that look far different from the Tekken cast we know today — and Tekken, showing concept sketches of characters like Jin, Paul, and Heihachi.

The video goes on to show what those characters looked like as they shifted from 2D drawings to 3D models, listing out details like the number of polygons used for each character, giving a rare look into the making of the game.

In June, Bandai Namco general manager Katsuhiro Harada announced that the latest version of Tekken, Tekken 7, has sold more than nine million copies since its release in 2015, putting the franchise’s total to over 53 million.

For more on the early days of the series, check out our 2019 story on the challenges of developing 3D arcade games in the early ’90s, featuring an interview with Tekken programmer Masanori Yamada.

iPhone 15 to borrow a big iPhone 14 feature? Check out this latest leak

[ad_1]

The iPhone 14 launch is still months away, but according to this leak, iPhone 15, which will come next year, will borrow something from it.

Apple iPhone 14 launch is months away and we are already seeing a huge number of leaks regarding what it may be packing. Be that as it may, now another leak has just indicated that the iPhone 15 will borrow some important aspects of iPhone 14. The iPhone 15 leak says that it will purloin the display specs from the iPhone 14. iPhone 15 launch is slated for 2023. A report by Phone Arena, quoting consulting company Omdia, revealed that Apple might use the same dual hole-punch design for the displays in the iPhone 15 series which is tipped to feature on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max- the 2 premium iPhones in the series.

According to earlier leaks and renders, it was being surmised that Apple will bring a dual punch-hole display design with the iPhone 14 Pro models. If that actually comes to pass then it will be the first time that the company will ditch the notch style. Yes, in all likelihood, it is expected that pill and hole-shaped selfie camera cutouts will adorn the iPhone 14 Pro series. The Omdia report does suggest that Apple will bring this new display design not just to the Pro models, but also to the vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Max.

It’s not just about the design, but the display size too. The report suggests that iPhone 15 display sizes will even remain the same for a second consecutive year, except for the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, which are expected to grow from the current iPhone 13’s 6.06-inches to 6.12 inches. Moreover, considering the tipped diagonal dimensions of the iPhone 15, Apple may even keep the resolution the same. Yes, it also means that the iPhone mini is not likely to make a comeback in 2023 either after having been dropped, for all intents and purposes, from the iPhone 14 series this year.

Having said all that, do know that this is all still in the realm of conjecture. Exactly what will be launched is not clear yet and Apple never provides any clarity on the subject and instead, keeps all things as secret as possible till the launch itself. So, patience is called for.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera samples The closest phone to a DSLR ever takes on Android and iPhone

Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera samples: The closest phone to a DSLR ever takes on Android and iPhone

[ad_1]

The 1-inch sensor smartphone camera dream… We’ve been so close, yet so far away from it for a while now.

In fact, phones like the Panasonic Lumix CM1, Sharp Aquos R6 & R7, and, of course, Sony’s Xperia Pro-I do feature 1-inch camera sensors. However, the different implementations come with a variety of different compromises:

  • The 2014 Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1 looked more like a compact camera rather than a phone, and it was far from well optimized to take great pictures
  • The Sharp Aquos R6 and R7 have only one camera on the back and lack any of the industry-leading computational photography that’s needed to take full advantage of the advanced hardware
  • The Xperia Pro-I captures just the middle 12MP of the 1-inch sensor that Sony’s managed to fit into the phone, meaning it effectively matches Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra for usable sensor area/size – 1/1.33-inch

If we look past the hardware implementations, the other common thing between the above-mentioned phones is that none of them comes from a mainstream phone brand. The ancient Lumix CM1 was quite literally made by a company that makes cameras; the Sharp Aquos R7 will be sold only in its home country of Japan, and Sony’s “Pro” devices come with complicated camera UI, and head-spinning prices, which make even Apple and Samsung’s flagships appear reasonably priced. But it seems like we’re finally witnessing “the right” implementation of a 1-inch camera sensor on a phone, and we’ve got Xiaomi to thank for it! Let’s dive in!

Xiaomi 12S Ultra: “The closest phone camera to a DSLR ever”

A few weeks ago, reputable tipster Ice Universe wrote in a short tweet that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will be “the closest to a DSLR phone camera ever”. As a tech enthusiast and smartphone photography fan, I was actually excited, which doesn’t happen often.

Despite the existence of the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro, Xiaomi hasn’t released an ultra premium flagship phone since March 2021, when the excellent Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra broke cover. So, it was clear that the company was taking its time and preparing something special.

Well, now we’re officially a few days away from the official unveiling of the Xiaomi 12S series, and the one leading the pack – the Xiaomi 12S Ultra might just blow your socks off with a full-blown 1-inch camera sensor, specifically made for Xiaomi’s Ultra flagship. As the wise men said… “Now we’re talking”.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra: Teaming up with Sony and Leica for the biggest camera collaboration in smartphone history

Xiaomi 12S Ultra: True Leica collaboration

You might’ve already heard that Xiaomi made a new friend (read: partner) – Leica. That’s after the German camera hardware maker, and Huawei parted ways a few months ago. Of course, this comes as no surprise as there are a ton of flashy collaborations of the same kind in the smartphone world. Sony, Nokia, and Vivo partner with Zeiss; OnePlus collaborates with Hasselblad, and it’s probably a matter of time until we see more of those “strategic partnerships” get born. But this time, it seems like it will be different! According to Twitter user Kartikey Singh, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra will be equipped with Leica’s pro-level SUMMICRON optical lens. We expect double-sided 8P, ultra-low-reflection coating on all rear cameras of the 12S Ultra – not just the primary one. In practical terms, this should result in reflectivity as low as 0.2% and light transmittance as high as 93%, meaning we should expect super-clear photos regardless of the lighting condition.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra: The $15M Sony partnership

When it comes to the star of the show, the 1-inch Sony IMX 989, this one wasn’t only specifically made for the Xiaomi 12S Ultra but co-developed by Xiaomi and Sony.

It’s important to note that words like “collaboration” and “co-development” can be vague and thrown around lightly in the smartphone world. However, this time around, reports say that Xiaomi has participated in the actual development of the IMX 989 by having a say on the parameters of the camera. Furthermore, as per reports, the cost of the development for the 1-inch IMX 989 is $15M and was split between Xiaomi and Sony.

In practical terms, Xiaomi promises that compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s main camera sensor, the IMX 989 has 172% more photosensitive area and is 32.5% faster in taking pictures. It is also said to have 101% more photosensitive capacity and 11% faster startup speed.

Numbers like these won’t be a surprise since, unlike the Sony Xperia Pro-I, which also technically features a 1-inch sensor, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is expected to make use of the entire sensor area of the IMX 989, which combined with Leica’s custom-made lenses might leave the competition in the dust.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra camera samples and the rest of the camera system: Leica real camera

And here’s an early look at what the 1-inch sensor of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra might be capable of. As you might be able to see, the Xiaomi-made samples have plenty of natural bokeh without the need for Portrait Mode and great detail even in challenging scenes, which is typical for big camera sensors, like the ones featured in compact cameras.Apart from photos, the 1-inch IMX 989 should make the Xiaomi 12S Ultra a very competitive video taker, too, as it will be able to gather a lot of light and benefit from the same natural subject separation that’s present in photos. Remember – we’re talking real bokeh. No Portrait or Cinematic Mode, which are software-based.

The rest of the camera hardware on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra should be equally as impressive…

As of now, we don’t know exactly what to expect, but the rumors are pointing towards a uniform multi-camera system with big, high-res sensors. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra featured a massive 1/2.0, 48MP 5x zoom lemns and another 1/2.0, 48MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, so Xiaomi takes all of the cameras on its ultra flagships very seriously. It’s been rumored that the 12S Ultra might bring two zoom lenses, but we’ll have to wait and see…

Xiaomi 12S Ultra will be a very impressive Android flagship phone too – it’s not just cameras…

Of course, the camera hardware will be the star of the show here, but the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is expected to bring a ton of other special hardware features, which should make it one of the best phones on the market. We expect:

  • The official debut of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chip; a stellar display; a big battery; and super-fast charging
  • Environmentally-friendly, stain-resistant, and anti-aging vegan leather design which will make the Xiaomi 12S Ultra lighter than the Mi 11 Ultra and S22 Ultra
  • A brand new, Xiaomi-developed custom Surge G1 chip for better battery performance
  • A novel heat dissipation system with a “biomimetic design”, similar to that of plant leaves, which opens a high-speed directional channel for the conduction of cold liquid, and the thermal conductivity is 100% higher than that of traditional smartphone cooling (VC)
  • New self-developed memory storage technology that can effectively avoid long-term performance degradation

In other words, we might be looking at the phone of the year here… Who knows!

Xiaomi 12S Ultra paves the way as 1-inch mobile camera sensors are finally going mainstream, but it might have one problem…

Xiaomi 12S, 12S Pro, and 12S Ultra availability

Now, one very important thing that I haven’t touched upon is availability… It is indeed a touchy subject for Chinese phone-makers. Of course, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra isn’t the only phone in the company’s lineup, despite the fact that this is the one that will steal all the headlines.

The Xiaomi 12S and Xiaomi 12S Pro will be the successors to Xiaomi’s current flagships – the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro, and they are almost certainly expected to come to the global scene. But unfortunately, we still don’t know if the China-based Xiaomi will allow the rest of the world to get a taste of the impressive Xiaomi 12S Ultra. We still don’t know if this one will be globally released.

If the Mi 11 Ultra is anything to go by, the messages are mixed… Xiaomi’s 2021 Ultra flagship was released in Europe and the UK, but supplies was scarce, and the phone eventually went missing, leaving European and British customers with only one alternative – to order directly from China, which is actually way less hassle-free of a process than you might think. Nonetheless, we have our fingers crossed that Xiaomi will make what’s shaping up to be one of the best phones of 2022 available globally.

Xiaomi and Sony will let other phone-makers use the IMX 989 for a commission

Either way, to end on a properly positive note, Xiaomi is becoming the new innovator in the smartphone world. The company has essentially taken on Huawei’s old role and delivers notable hardware upgrades year over year without paying much attention to the competition’s safer bets, and the Xiaomi 12S Ultra’s camera system will be the proof of that.

What’s interesting is that, apparently, Xiaomi and Sony have decided to let other phone-makers use the co-developed IMX 989 sensor in their phones for a commission (that’s to go towards both Sony and Xiaomi), so the monstrous 1-inch camera won’t remain exclusive to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which is great news for the rest of the smartphone world!

According to the trustworthy Honor & Huawei tipster, Teme, the first phone to gain the new IMX 989 after Xiaomi should be Honor’s Magic 5 Ultimate. The 1-inch IMX 989 is expected to “become a star sensor and will be widely used in (more) ultra-flagship products, as per another top leakster, Ice Universe. He also makes it clear that Samsung is working on its own “gimmick 200MP camera”, and won’t be taking advantage of the IMX 989.

See you on July 4 when the Xiaomi 12S, 12S Pro, and 12S Ultra will take the stage!

Steam User Spends 5 Years Purchasing All Of Its Hot Dog Emojis

[ad_1]

A cartoon man wearing a hot dog costume stands in front of hundreds of hot dog emojis.

Image: Valve / Kotaku / NotionPic (Shutterstock)

20-year-old Brian Haugh has spent the past six years purchasing thousands of “:steam2016:” emoticons, which Valve created to promote the 2016 Steam Summer Sale and looks like a hot dog wearing little shoes. On Steam, you can purchase emoticons from other users in the Community Marketplace or create them by playing games that generate Steam collectibles. You can use them when chatting in Steam, to spruce up your profile description, or to create Super Mario art. Steam emoticons are typically $0.10 curios with limited practical use and aesthetic value, but they mean much more to Haugh.

“I will never stop looking for or at wieners,” he told me. “Wieners will be on my mind until the day I die.”

18 hot dog emojis stand side by side.

Some of Haugh’s dogs.
Screenshot: Brian Haugh

Haugh is on a mission to buy every :steam2016: hot dog emoticon available on the Community Marketplace, and has been doing so since the day he turned 16 in 2016. He routinely refers to them as “wieners” or “the wieners,” and as of June 30, he has 2,525 of them in his collection, which cost him over $250. He tracks these numbers in a fastidious spreadsheet, which contains all wiener transaction history and visualizes data in a graph named “Wieners Purchased Over Time.”

A graph visualizes Haugh's hot dog emoji purchases.

2018 was a good wiener year.
Screenshot: Brian Haugh

The wieners were a joke, at first. “I used to be a part of a small gaming group that met together to play Mount and Blade: Napoleonic Wars,” Haugh said. “During the summer of 2016, the Steam wiener emoji was released, and for whatever reason, I was stupid hyped over it. I kept spamming it, and our leader got fed up because other people were starting to join me. So he banned the use of it, stifling my rights to use the wiener emoji.”

In response, Haugh and his friends started drafting plans for a “wiener resistance,” which consisted of multiple people spamming :steam2016: until they got kicked from the server. He started buying the emoticon in bulk shortly after in celebration of the successful trolling, he says. Do you remember what it’s like to be 16?

A list titled the "Communist Plan" explains how to spam the wiener emoji.

The 2016 wiener resistance gained momentum on Steam.
Screenshot: Brian Haugh

But if you look beyond the teen boy shenanigans, Haugh’s attention to detail cannot be overstated. He’s dedicated to his craft, which happens to be collecting wieners. He’s so dedicated that he still performs routine checks on Steam’s wiener load even after feeling like he already made his “final purchase,” which bought up every available :steam2016: emoticon at that point in time (aside from one priced at $400).

“It has become a religion for me,” he said. “It’s always in the back of my mind.” And it has changed his understanding of real hot dogs forever—Haugh says that it “might sound strange, but occasionally I’ll see one, and this whole experience will flash into my mind and I’ll laugh.”

In addition to motivating schematic shifts, his mass wiener purchases might also be influencing the Steam market. They’re likely to be the sole determinants of :steam2016: emoticon prices, and because of the spreadsheet and Steam’s own data visualizers, Haugh has proof that his bulk purchases often lead to price spikes.

A screenshot of a Steam marketplace graph shows hot dog emoticon price changes.

“No less than three days earlier, I had made a purchase of 66 wieners,” Haugh says about the July 1 price hike.
Screenshot: Brian Haugh

It checks out. “If I bought every single emoji worth $0.03 – $0.10 on a specific day, for example, the next day, the only [emoticons] being sold would be $0.11,” he said. “The average value would have increased, and other people would begin selling their own wieners at $0.11, which could be seen as the average trading prices for that day in the Steam market.”

“Steam’s marketplace is similar to that of a stock market,” he said. “Things are only able to be bought if someone else is selling,” which is why he let the $400 wiener live.

Our world seems to get darker and more filled with monkeypox every day, but at least one man’s loyalty to wieners stays good and strong.

“I don’t ever plan on stopping,” Haugh said. “There will always be some poor fool to list a wiener for a few cents on the market, and when he does, I’ll be there to buy it.”

Samsung rolls out third One UI Watch 4.5 beta for the Galaxy Watch 4

[ad_1]

Samsung is currently beta testing One UI Watch 4.5 based on Wear OS 3.5 for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic. At the beginning of June, the South Korean OEM kicked off the One UI Watch beta program, allowing enthusiastic users to try out the upcoming update before public release. The second beta followed nearly three weeks later, bringing tons of bug fixes. Now, Samsung has released the third beta for the smartwatches with further software refinements and improvements.

Galaxy Watch 4 One UI 4.5 beta 3 changelog

In a recent post over at Samsung Community forums, Samsung announced the rollout of the third One UI Watch 4.5 beta for the Galaxy Watch 4 family. The update (software version R8**XXU1ZVFA) includes the following bug fixes:

  • Improving Watchface GUI
  • Fixed restore problem after Tile backup
  • Fixed SysUI crash problem when pushing Home button during scrolling
  • Fixed Music Bixby malfunction problem
  • Improving wearing detection accuracy
  • Improving usability of Alarm, Stopwatch, Timer, and World Clock
  • Stabilizing touch performance
  • Improving power consumption caused by Buds auto switch communication
  • Improving performance of automatic exercise
  • Improving recognition rate of Wrist up when bicycle exercise
  • Fixed BT connection problem when running gallery app
  • Other improvements are applied

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 XDA Forums

Those running the second beta build should receive the new update via an incremental OTA soon. Alongside the new beta update, Samsung has also revised the Galaxy Watch 4 beta plugin (linked below) to version 2.2.11.22063011. Keep in mind that the beta app is only available for those who signed up for the beta program using the Samsung Members app.

We already have a pretty extensive look at various UI components corresponding to Samsung’s upcoming update for its watches, thanks to a recent leak by Evan Blass. It’s true that there’s no official word yet on the stable release timeline. But with the current beta program moving at a swift pace, it shouldn’t take long for Samsung to open up the latest software to more users via stable channel.

John Isner makes history again, becomes all-time leading ace leader

[ad_1]

John Isner wrote his name into the record books at Wimbledon again on Friday as he became the all-time leading ace leader in ATP Tour history.

The American, whose 11-hour, five-minute epic match against Nicolas Mahut in 2010 is the longest tennis has ever seen, hit 24 aces in his third-round match against Italian Jannik Sinner to overtake Ivo Karlovic of Croatia at the top.

In the list of total aces since 1991, Isner took his tally to 13,748, overtaking Karlovic, who has 13,728. Roger Federer is a distant third in the all-time list, more than 2,000 behind.

Isner began Wimbledon 94 aces behind Karlovic, but hit 56 in his first-round win over Enzo Couacaud and 34 in his victory over two-time champion Andy Murray.

Speaking before Friday’s match, Isner said it was a record he would look back on with satisfaction when he is finished playing.

“It’s not going to put me in the Hall of Fame or anything like that, because that’s not me,” he said.

“But I will be the all-time leader. I’ll keep playing, keep adding to my total. I don’t think that’s a record that — I don’t know if it will get broken. I could be up there for a long time. It’s actually really cool. It’s something I’m really proud of.”

Here are the top 10 ace leaders on ATP Tour, since 1991, according to the ATP:

  1. John Isner 13,748

  2. Ivo Karlovic 13,728

  3. Roger Federer 11,478

  4. Goran Ivanisevic 10,237

  5. Feliciano Lopez 10,155

  6. Andy Roddick 9,074

  7. Pete Sampras 8,858

  8. Sam Querrey 8,858

  9. Ivan Ljubicic 8,138

Thousands rally in Sudan day after 9 killed during protests

[ad_1]

Placeholder while article actions load

CAIRO — Thousands took to the streets Friday in Sudan’s capital, a day after nine people were killed in demonstrations against the country’s ruling generals.

The United States and others in the international community condemned the violence in this East African nation, which has been rocked by near-weekly protests since an Oct. 25 coup upended its fragile transition to democracy.

The rallies on Thursdays were the largest seen in months. Sudanese military authorities have met the protests with a deadly crackdown, which has so far killed 113 people, including 18 children.

In and near Khartoum, large funeral marches took place for some of those killed the day before, while others gathered after Friday prayers at mosques in the country’s capital. Online, photographs of the dead were posted, in some cases in an effort to identify them.

The Sudan’s Doctors Committee, a medical group that monitors casualties from demonstrations, said security forces shot and killed nine people, including a child, in or near Khartoum during the rallies on Thursday. The demonstrations coincided with widespread internet disruptions. Internet monitors and activists say the government has crippled communications to prevent gatherings and slow the spread of news on days when large protest turnout is expected.

Sudan’s leading pro-democracy groups — Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change and the Resistance Committees — had called for nationwide protest against the coup. The takeover upended the country’s short-lived transition to democracy following the 2019 ouster of longtime autocratic ruler Omar al-Bashir.

Since the coup, the U.N. political mission in Sudan, the African Union, and the eight-nation east African regional Intergovernmental Authority in Development group have been trying to broker a way out of the political impasse. But talks have yielded no results so far.

In a joint statement tweeted Friday the three bodies expressed “disappointment over the continued use of excessive force by security forces and lack of accountability for such actions, despite repeated commitments by authorities.”

Thursday’s protests also fell on the third anniversary of a 2019 mass rally that forced the generals to sit down at the negotiating table with pro-democracy groups and eventually sign a power-sharing agreement that was expected to govern Sudan during a transitional period, until general elections were to be held. The coup last October scuttled this arrangement.

Western governments have repeatedly called on the generals to allow for peaceful protests, but have also angered the protest movement for sometimes engaging with the leading generals. Pro-democracy leaders call for the generals to leave power immediately.

“We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of life in yesterday’s protests,” the U.S. Embassy in Sudan said in a statement Friday. “We urge all parties to resume negotiations and call on peaceful voices to rise above those who advocate for or commit violence.”

From Geneva, the U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said she was alarmed by Thursday’s killings, especially “after the police had announced they would not use lethal force to disperse the demonstrators.”

“In no case is force permissible to dissuade or intimidate protesters from exercising their rights to freedom of expression and of peaceful assembly, or to threaten them with harm for doing so,” she said.

Police said Friday an investigation was launched after a video circulated online, appearing to show security forces prodding and kicking a badly injured protester in the street the day before. According to pro-democracy groups, the protester later died. In a statement released on the website of the country’s state-run news agency, police said the video shows security personnel violating orders to not approach demonstrations with firearms. It said those involved would be held accountable.

The country’s interior ministry, which oversees the police, has continuously denied the use of live fire on protesters, despite evidence from activists and pro-democracy groups to the opposite.

Augmented Reality, Creator Economy, B2B Marketing & More

[ad_1]

After three years, the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity brought back in-person attendance for the first time since the pandemic hit, and let’s just say it definitely made up for lost time. Thousands of attendees flew to the South of France to celebrate the best in creativity and advertising. The experience went beyond just the annual award show with tons of learnings, moments, and highlights worth sharing. Here’s my top takeaways below:

Vogue & Snap Showcase the Power of Augmented Reality

High fashion met high tech in this collaboration between Vogue and Snap as they teamed up to create an augmented reality (AR) exhibition. Each room was curated by designers such as Balenciaga, Dior, Versace, and more. Inside, you could use Snap’s Lens technology to scan codes called “landmarks” to reveal AR experiences and virtually try on clothes. For example, in the Gucci exhibition room, you could virtually try on the fur coat and suit jacket on display.

While this event demonstrated the luxury of designer brands, it also highlighted the applicability of AR in retail. According to Snap, 77% of customers were interested in accessing spaces where they could explore a virtual shopping experience and create a ‘try before you buy’ wardrobe and 66% of customers who use AR are less likely to return their purchases. With that, brands can use this technology to increase sales, reduce customer returns, and protect their bottom line.

This exhibit also hit on a greater trend as ASOS, Rayban, and Sephora, to name a few, already use AR shopping to creatively engage their customers. Moving forward, AR technology holds tremendous potential as the global market size for AR products — such as head mounted displays, smart glasses, and stationary AR systems — is currently at $6.12 billion but projected to grow to $97.76 billion by 2028 with Snap at the forefront of bringing it to the masses.

LinkedIn CEO Predicts Future of B2B Advertising

During his keynote, LinkedIn CEO Ryan Rolansky spoke about how nine out of ten of last year’s largest tech IPO’s were B2B companies which means that there will likely be a huge influx in B2B marketing spend in coming years.

Just as Nike and The Coca-Cola Company first made their brands compelling to consumers years ago, Rolansky predicted that more B2B brands will do the same but for their business clients — and do it by hiring more technical employees than before. Rolansky shared a few more statistics that spoke to this point:

  • In 2021, for every creative role hired, 1.25 technical roles were hired
  • There’s been a 32% decline in hiring for creative skills (like strategy and branding) compared to a 47% increase in tech skills (like coding)
  • The ad industry lost 5.5% more people than it gained in the past 5 years.

Don’t be surprised if we see more B2B companies winning awards at Cannes Lions in the next few years.

Paris Hilton, Gary Vaynerchuk & Swan Sit Discuss NFT Marketing

In a conversation with Swan Sit, Paris Hilton and Gary Vaynerchuk spoke about the future of NFTs and how brands can best take advantage. Hilton spoke about how she created an early version of Paris World (now hosted in Roblox) back in 2016, which was ahead of its time. Her vision of virtual nightclubs, helicopters, and mansions essentially predicted what we know as the metaverse today. It’s this kind of forward thinking that led to her most recent NFT launch on Origin Protocol in collaboration with Superplastic.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of speaking with Hilton myself and I asked her about how she started her NFT journey and working with Origin Protocol. With that came her project “Past Lives, New Beginnings,” featuring a 1/1, open edition, and eleven limited edition NFTs meant to symbolize ending one chapter and entering the next as an advocate and entrepreneur.

As she and Vaynerchuk continue to invest in this space through VeeFriends, they encourage brands to do the same: “Brands can call my company and I will make it happen”, said Hilton. Her best advice was the significance of partnering with the right people – and of course, she’s one of them.

Celebrities Call For Greater Diversity

People often say, “you can’t be what you can’t see.” At the Bloomberg ESG House, Samuel Etienne hosted a panel which featured Martin Agency’s Chief Creative Officer Danny Robinson who spoke to this point:

“76% of non-white creative professionals didn’t even know [advertising] was a career when they were in high school,” he said. It’s a staggering statistic that celebrities like Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Ryan Reynolds are using their influence to change.

At the same panel with Robinson and Etienne, Ryan Reynolds spoke about his latest initiative, Creative Ladder. This nonprofit aims to help students from all backgrounds learn about all the creative careers that await them, and offers leadership training for those beginning their journeys.

Later, Tracee Ellis Ross reflected on certain “mentorship programs” to say that it’s unfair to give someone an unpaid internship and then leave them high and dry without a position when it ends. She said there’s “nothing wrong with being a mentor, but give people positions. These ‘mentor programs’ that don’t pay — that utilize people and everything they have to offer — then don’t promise a job at the end of that mentorship, does not work.”

On the Cannes Lions main stage, Issa Rae talked about the work that stil needs to be done to increase diversity and inclusion in the industry. “I still see bias in the industry,” she said. “Now there’s a public discourse about it, people can call it out and see the results.”

Rae is leading by example by implementing a mandate on all her projects: 60% of all crew members on set must be of diverse backgrounds. It’s also not the first time she’s challenging bias in the industry – in 2014 she launched ColorCreative, a management company meant to support diverse creators and produce inclusive content.

Looking back on her career, Rae said she’s most proud of “making a pipeline [and] having people rise in the industry.”

Spotify Takes Audio Beyond Music

Beyond hosting concerts at Cannes headlined by Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, and Dua Lipa, Spotify came to Cannes to speak about another important part of their platform: podcasts.

In less than four years, they went from having just a few podcasts to becoming a global leader in the market. Lee Brown, Spotify’s Global Head of Advertising Business & Platform said that “creators are the backbone of [this] business,” which is why it’s so important to support them.

Spotify also hosted panel discussions with some of their top talent including the “Batman Unburied” voice actors Winston Duke and Hasan Minhaj, who discussed the adaptation and their experience creating the audio-only series.

Spotify’s made it clear that podcasting is a priority, and the company’s eager to reach younger listeners. Highly produced shows like “Batman Unburied” serve as a great entry point for audiences to discover other content from smaller creators. With so many different kinds of podcasts to enjoy, Spotify attracts a wide variety of listeners – 32.5 million monthly listeners in the United States, and that number’s only going up.

YouTube Shared Latest Trends in Creator Economy

In her keynote, YouTube & Video Global Solutions VP Debbie Weinstein spoke about how YouTube paid their creators 30 billion dollars in the past three year, which is more than any other social platform. Thanks to YouTube’s monetization programs, more creators are pursuing their craft full-time and earning a living from their content.

Weinstein also highlighted the growth of YouTube Shorts, the platform’s short-form video answer to TikTok. She cited that there are over 30 billion Shorts views everyday and 1.5 billion active Shorts users. While this format is becoming more popular among Gen Z, viewers still haven’t abandoned longer videos. In fact, 59% of viewers use YouTube Shorts to discover topics they want to watch longer versions of, and 60% of them use YouTube to find more content on a show or movie they just watched – meaning the two formats actually complement each other instead of competing.

Following Weinstein, YouTube’s Global Director of Culture & Trends Kevin Allocca presented a fascinating keynote on the latest trends and insights across the platform. He spoke about several growing content genres, including:

  • “Comfort Creators”: Alloca said 83% of Gen Z used YouTube to watch soothing content that helps them relax. As a result, formats like ASMR continue to evolve as viewers look to creators to help them feel “comfort” and lower anxiety.
  • “Community Creativity”: Creators are turning niche interests into shared experiences. A great example is Big Jet TV which drew in nearly 250,000 viewers to watch creator Jerry Dyer’s coverage of planes navigating Storm Eunice as they landed at Heathrow airport.
  • “Multi-format Creativity”: Allocca elaborated on Weinstein’s earlier point about how creators are using Shorts and long-form content to complement each other.

Allocca later spoke with creator Mark Rober about his journey on YouTube throughout the past decade, as they reminisced on the changing landscape and how to best navigate it. The two concluded by saying their best advice to creators is to focus on building dialogues, experimenting with formats, and responding to the needs of their audience.

With all that happened at Cannes Lions this year, there were undoubtedly moments that I missed so feel free to comment below if you were there and had any other takeaways or learnings to share.

Elon Musk faces another trouble nearly a month after Amber Heard trial

by media desk

Billionaire Elon Musk has been hit by another trouble nearly a month after his former ladylove Amber Heard lost defamation trial against Johnny Depp.

According to Reuters, fifteen Black former or current employees at Elon Musk company Tesla filed a lawsuit against the electric car maker on Thursday, alleging they were subjected to racial abuse and harassment at its factories.

The workers said they were subjected to offensive racist comments and behavior by colleagues, managers, and human resources employees on a regular basis, according to the lawsuit filed in a California state court.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

It previously has denied wrongdoing and says it has policies in place to prevent and address workplace misconduct.

Earlier in June, a Tesla shareholder filed a lawsuit accusing CEO Elon Musk and the company’s board of directors of neglecting worker complaints and fostering a toxic workplace culture.

The lawsuit has been filed against Musk’s company nearly a month after the Pirates of the Caribbean actor won defamation case against Heard

NEW DELHI, July 1 (Reuters) – China’s Great Wall Motor (601633.SS) has shelved plans to invest $1 billion in India and laid off all employees at its operations there after failing to obtain regulatory approvals, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter said on Friday.

The Chinese automaker has been planning to enter the Indian market since 2020 but now becomes one of the biggest casualties of New Delhi’s increased scrutiny of investments from Beijing.

Without directly commenting on the exit, a Great Wall statement said the company “would like to thank all the members of Indian team for their contribution”, adding that it would continue to study the Indian market and look for opportunities in the future.

Great Wall’s India entry plan was announced with great fanfare during the country’s biennial auto show in January 2020. India was a key market for the Chinese SUV manufacturer’s global expansion plans and the company had envisioned a plant that would be its biggest outside China.

Months later, after Great Motor began hiring staff in India, New Delhi increased scrutiny of investments from countries with which it shares a land border to deter opportunistic takeovers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The crackdown deepened after a border clash between India and China later that year, which has since held up billions of dollars of capital inflow in the auto and technology sectors among others.

The sources, who declined to be named, said that Great Wall laid off about a dozen employees at its Indian business on Friday after telling them it had failed to obtain foreign direct investment approval from the government to buy a former General Motors (GM) (GM.N) plant in the country.

Earlier on Friday Great Wall and GM called off the plant deal, drawing a line under a two-year initiative. read more

An Indian government spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment outside regular business hours.

The axed employees were working on the company’s planned India entry in departments including finance, strategy and marketing, two of the sources said, adding that they are to be given three months’ severance pay.

Great Wall’s patience had been waning since last year. In August it allocated to Brazil a portion of its planned $1 billion India investment and reassigned some of its staff. read more

The company’s research and development centre in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru is operating as normal, it told Reuters earlier on Friday.

Indian SC orders Nupur Sharma to apologize for ‘setting the country on fire’

By Abid Ali Narejo

A ruling party spokeswoman whose remarks on Islam embroiled India in a diplomatic row and sparked huge protests should apologise for having “set the country on fire”, New Delhi’s top court said Friday.

Anger engulfed the Islamic world last month after Nupur Sharma’s incendiary comments during a TV debate, with nearly 20 countries calling in their Indian ambassadors for an explanation.

Rallies also erupted around South Asia, with police killing two demonstrators in India, while this week two Muslim men were accused of the grisly murder of a Hindu tailor who had posted in support of Sharma on Facebook.

“She and her loose tongue have set the country on fire,” India’s Supreme Court said during a procedural hearing on several criminal complaints filed against Sharma.
“This lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country,” it added. “She should apologise to the whole nation.”

Since her comments, Sharma has been subjected to multiple police complaints filed against her across India by members of the public.

While the 37-year-old’s whereabouts are unknown, her lawyer was in court asking that the cases be consolidated in New Delhi, a request denied on Friday.

Sharma was at one time seen as a rising star in the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but her remarks forced it into damage control.
The party soon suspended the spokeswoman from her post and issued a statement insisting it respected all religions.

Nupur Sharma1khi

Since coming to power nationally in 2014, the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been accused of championing discriminatory policies towards followers of the Islamic faith.

Critics also say the government has presided over a crackdown on free speech and rights activists.

This week police arrested the Muslim journalist Mohammed Zubair, a vocal critic of the government who had helped draw attention to Sharma’s remarks.

He was arrested on Monday and remains in custody over a four-year-old tweet about a Hindu god that police said had been the subject of complaints by Hindu groups.

He said his only fault was that he spoke the truth and vowed that he will continue to speak the truth. “Thank you for your support. Allah has commanded us to speak the truth and be with the truthful.”

As soon as we left the office, a car blocked our vehicle and six people tortured us,” Ayaz was quoted as saying by his close associates.

Soon after the incident, SP Civil Lines Raza Safdar Kazmi visited the office of the private TV channel Amir worked for and sought details of the assault from the senior journalist.

The police official assured the journalist of tracing the unidentified assailants and arresting them at the earliest.

Taking notice of the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz sought report from the police chief and directed the law enforcers to ensure early arrest the of culprits.

“The accused should be brought to book and further action should be taken. The incident of violence against Ayaz Amir is reprehensible,” he was quoted as saying in the official statement.

Deribit claims crypto hedge fund Three Arrows failed to repay $80mn

[ad_1]

Three Arrows Capital fell into liquidation this week after exchange Deribit claimed the crypto hedge fund failed to repay $80mn, highlighting the severity of the crunch at the prominent digital asset investment company.

The investor allegedly failed to reimburse the funds after derivatives venue Deribit unwound Three Arrows’ positions to meet a margin call prompted by last month’s digital asset market turmoil, according to court filings in the British Virgin Islands.

The claims underscore the extent to which Three Arrows used borrowings to boost its wagers on the cryptocurrency market. BlockFi and Genesis, two major crypto financial services groups, had also liquidated some of Three Arrows’s positions last month after it failed to meet margin calls when its bets turned sour.

Three Arrows was one of the most active players in the broader industry and was a shareholder in Deribit, according to the exchange. The investment group’s troubles have intensified the credit crisis in the digital asset market.

The court documents filed by Deribit claim that Three Arrows had borrowed bitcoin and ether from the derivatives exchange in March 2020, at the depths of the pandemic. On June 11 2022, as cryptocurrency prices tumbled, Three Arrows breached Deribit’s loan stipulation to have a minimum balance in its account.

Two days later Deribit began to liquidate Three Arrows’ positions and on June 15 it terminated the lending agreement and demanded payments of the outstanding loans, interest and negative asset value of the account, the court documents say.

As of June 20, that amounted to $80.13mn, the documents showed. That consisted mainly of 1,300 bitcoin and 15,000 ether in the loan, valued at around $42mn, and negative asset values of $37.1mn.

Deribit pushed for Three Arrows to be liquidated as “the company is or is likely to become unable to pay its debts as they fall due, and is therefore insolvent”, the court filing said.

Advisory firm Teneo was appointed as joint liquidator of Three Arrows in the British Virgin Islands earlier this week following Deribit’s claims.

Three Arrows and Deribit did not respond to requests for comment. Deribit tweeted last month that due to “market developments”, it had a “small number of accounts that have a net debt to us that we consider as potentially distressed”. Su Zhu, Three Arrows co-founder, tweeted in June that “we are in the process of communicating with relevant parties and fully committed to working this out”.

Three Arrows is also under scrutiny by the Singapore financial regulator, which earlier this week reprimanded the fund for providing misleading information, as well as for breaching an asset under management threshold. The Monetary Authority of Singapore said it had been investigating the fund, which was initially managed from the city state before it shifted to the British Virgin Islands, in September 2021.

New method boosts the study of regulation of gene activity — ScienceDaily

[ad_1]

One way cells can control the activities of their genes is by adding small chemical modifications to the DNA that determine which genes are turned on or off. Methyl groups are one of these chemical modifications or tags. Researchers have found that in bacteria DNA methylation plays a role in regulating virulence, reproduction and gene expression. In other organisms, including humans, DNA methylation is essential in regulating tissue-specific gene expression, which defines the nature of a cell, for instance, whether it would be a skin cell or a brain cell.

“The study of DNA methylation is part of the field of epigenetics. It is important because it helps us understand why one particular type of bacteria causes a more severe disease than another or how a normal cell can change and give rise to diseases, such as cancer,” said corresponding author Dr. Tao Wu, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. The Wu Lab is a cancer epigenetics lab. Its long-term goal is to overcome cancer therapeutic resistance by better understanding the role of epigenetics in this disease.

In bacteria, there are three different forms of DNA methylation. The most common is one that tags the DNA base or building block adenine (N6-methyladenine or 6mA). The other two tag the DNA base cytosine (N4-methylcytosine or 4mC and 5-methylcytosine or 5mC). Although there are many methods to study DNA methylation, a few can efficiently map the three types simultaneously, Wu explained.

“It was thought that organisms other than bacteria, including mammals, mostly only used methyl-cytosine tags — the 5mC — to regulate gene activity. But in 2016, when I was at Yale University, we reported in Nature the discovery that DNA 6mA also is present in mammals,” Wu said. “This finding opened a whole new set of possibilities in the study of cancer epigenetics.”

The traditional methods to study the 5mC do not capture the adenine methylation in mammalian tissues. “This motivated us to develop a novel method to profile not only 6mA, but also 4mC and 5mC,” Wu said.

In the current study, published in the journal Genome Biology, Wu and his colleagues report the development of a chemical-based sequencing method to quantify different epigenetic markers simultaneously. Their method, called NT-seq, short for nitrite treatment followed by next-generation sequencing, is a sequencing method for detecting multiple types of DNA methylation genome-wide. The method also can amplify limited clinical samples, something other methods cannot do.

“We show that NT-seq can detect 6mA, 4mC and 5mC both in bacterial and non-bacterial cells, including mammalian cells,” Wu said. “Compared to other methods, NT-seq is efficient, cost-effective, quicker and has high resolution. Some of its limitations are specific to the particular composition of some genomes. We have suggestions in the paper on how to compensate for this limitation.”

“We are excited about NT-seq,” Wu said. “It can uncover new DNA methylation patterns or motifs, validate results obtained with other methods, generate datasets for developing machine-learning tools for methylation analysis and paves the way to further the epigenetic study of genomic DNA 6mA in non-bacterial organisms, including studies on the epigenetics of cancer.”

All our demands accepted in SC verdict on Punjab CM election, says Elahi

By Abid Ali Narejo

PML-Q leader and Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervez Elahi on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Punjab chief minister election — which will now be held on July 22 — saying that “all our demands have been accepted today”, while CM Hamza Shehbaz accepted the decision “with an open heart”.

The apex court, after an hours-long hearing today, ruled that the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) order to recount the votes cast in the April 16 Punjab chief minister election and conduct a second round of voting if required would now be implemented after by-elections on 20 Punjab Assembly seats are conducted on July 17.

The decision was reached after a consensus between the PTI, PML-Q and the Punjab government.

Talking to the media after the hearing, Elahi, who is competing for the post of Punjab’s chief executive alongside PML-N’s Hamza, hailed the top court’s order. “A good decision has been taken today in which all our demands have been met.

“Even the chief justice appreciated that a consensus was reached amicably,” he remarked.

Briefing the media on the order, the PML-Q leader said that the court decided there would be no “use of police” or “victimisation” during the July 22 elections. “Everything will be held as per the rules of the assembly.”

The chief minister election, he went on, would now be held after the house was complete. “They will be conducted once the notifications for the 20 PA members and 5 reserved PTI seats are issued.”

Elahi asserted that the poll would be held in the assembly, adding that he would be responsible for ensuring that the house rules and election code of conduct was followed.

He also said that the verdict was a “win for democracy and the Constitution”.

Wouldn’t stand in run-off election if didn’t have numbers: Hamza
Separately, in a media talk, Hamza said that he had accepted the SC’s decision with an “open heart”.

He recalled that Punjab had been a victim of a constitutional crisis for the past three months.

“First the elections were postponed, then oath-taking was delayed. For two months, we didn’t have a cabinet.

“As a politics student, I believe that the amount of crises Punjab has seen in these last three months, it can get an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records,” Hamza said.

Today, during the hearing, he pointed out, “I told the court that I am a democratic person and have struggled for 17 years. I told the honourable chief justice that if I didn’t have numbers for the run-off election, I wouldn’t even be standing here. I would have gone home.”

“I told them to hold the election right now,” Hamza said, adding that the SC’s decision was acceptable for him because “I have nothing to hide”.

Hamza continued that during the by-elections on July 17, whichever party the public chose should be given the province’s charge. “Even on that day, whatever the public chooses, I will accept it.”

He, however, expressed confidence that the nation would show their support for PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the by-polls as they had seen who was working for the public.

SC verdict is acceptance of PTI stance: Umar
Speaking to journalists outside the Supreme Court building, senior PTI leader and former finance minister Asad Umar hailed the top court’s ordering re-election of the Punjab chief minister on July 22, saying the decision was an affirmation of the PTI’s stance that Hamza Shehbaz “had never been an elected chief executive of the province”.

Blink-182 Drummer Travis Barker Hospitalized With Pancreatitis

[ad_1]

July 1, 2022 – Travis Barker, drummer for rock band blink-182, was hospitalized this week in Los Angeles with pancreatitis.

Barker, 46, husband of celebrity influencer Kourtney Kardashian, recently had a colonoscopy to check for colon cancer. Experts have weighed in on how likely the link is between his colonoscopy and pancreatitis.

“It’s possible, but it’s rare,” says Timothy B. Gardner, MD, director of pancreatic disorders at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

“It’s exceedingly rare,” agrees Vladimir M Kushnir, MD. “Colonoscopy is an extremely safe and lifesaving procedure.”

Serious complications from a colonoscopy happen well less than 1 in 1,000 times, he says.

Only five cases of pancreatitis after a colonoscopy have been reported in medical literature, Kushnir says, usually after very hard procedures. “This is not something I would ever worry about if I were having a colonoscopy or a family member was having a colonoscopy,” says Kushnir, director of bariatric endoscopy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

“I’ve done thousands and thousands of colonoscopies, and I’ve never had a patient develop pancreatitis,” Gardner says.

One thing remains unclear: how much time there was between Barker’s colonoscopy and his pancreatitis. Typically, the pancreas would have to become inflamed within 24 to 48 hours to be related, Gardner says.

More Common Causes

The pancreas is a big digestive gland that sits behind the stomach. It can get inflamed for a variety of reasons, but it is most often related to gallstone disease or excessive alcohol use.

When the pancreas gets inflamed, it can cause belly pain and nausea. “In most cases, it gets better in a few days,” Kushnir says. “But in some rare cases, patients can get into a serious inflammatory condition and it can be quite severe. Pancreatitis is actually one of the most common gastrointestinal conditions to require hospitalization.”

Gardner agrees that most people with pancreatitis recover within a few days. He also notes that some medications and pancreatic cancer can also cause pancreatitis.

Anatomy Lesson

One part of the colon is called the splenic flexure, which is at the left upper part of the belly that sits right next to the tail of the pancreas. “So they are right next to each other,” Gardner says.

“So conceivably, if we’re doing a colonoscopy, the pressure could cause mechanical contact with that part of the pancreas,” he says. But again, it’s very rare.

According to a report in People, Barker entered Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Tuesday with cramps, extreme stomach pain, and difficulty walking.
