RIYADH: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman left Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for Greece and France, according to state news agency SPA, his first visit to a European Union member state.

According to a Greek diplomatic source, bilateral agreements in energy, military cooperation, and an undersea data cable will be signed.

Mitsotakis was among the Western leaders who visited Riyadh, which sparked outrage in the West and tarnished the prince’s image as a reformist pushing to open up Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter.Saudi Crown

France’s President Emanuel Macron also visited Riyadh last year, and US President Joe Biden met with Prince Mohammed during a trip to Saudi Arabia earlier this month as Washington works to reduce tensions with Riyadh.

Energy prices spiked earlier this year as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Saudi Arabia came under pressure from the US and other European nations to increase oil production.

Ahead of the mid-term elections later this year, the Biden administration is under pressure as a result of rising inflation in the US, which has reached 40-year highs.

However, the largest crude exporter in the world has resisted calls to increase supply, citing its dedication to production schedules established by the OPEC+ exporting group that it co-chairs with Russia.

The kingdom had done what it could for the oil market, according to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, who made this statement in May.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the newly elected leader of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates, was welcomed to Paris by French President Emmanuel Macron last week.

Officials revealed a deal between the state oil company of the UAE, ADNOC, and French energy giant Total Energies during that trip “for cooperation in the area of energy supplies.”

IGP directs instructions for comprehensive security measures during Muharram

By Staff reporter

Islamabad: Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, the chief of the Islamabad Capital Police, reviewed security plans for “Muharram ul Harram” on Tuesday and decided to increase patrols and alertness at various locations to ensure complete security. It was decided during the meeting that the Operations Division, under the direction of DIG Operations, will offer all operational and technical assistance, while the Logistics Division, under the direction of DIG Headquarters, will provide all logistical support.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad, Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, presided over a security meeting to assess security measures for “Muharram ul Harram” at the Central Police headquarters. DIG (Operations) Sohail Zafar Chatha, he said, would keep an eye on all security-related arrangements. All police officers were given the order to stay in close contact with the peace committees, procession leaders, and organisers of Majalis during Muharram-ul-Haram. According to him, organisers’ collaboration with law enforcement should be guaranteed. To give special cards to police officers and volunteers doing responsibilities, the Islamabad Police Chief was asked.

He gave instructions to keep procession vigilance at a high level using drone cameras, smart cars, security cameras, and safe city cameras. He stated that DG will be in charge of all of these arrangements (Safe City). Additionally, Safe City will create a control room. After consulting with the relevant authorities, the IGP also gave the order to set up sufficient lighting and to remove bushes from various areas around places of worship. When organising religious gatherings, Imam bargahs would need security from police commandos and cars. He advised making sure that processions followed the predetermined routes and timeframes were rigorously adhered to. He also ordered the employment of commando vehicles for efficient patrolling.

He gave the order to maintain close communication between all divisions of the Islamabad police and employees. The IGP stated that walk-through gates must be built and manned by a sizable number of cops at all points of entry and exit for Majalis and processions.

To ensure that all Muharram procession routes, Imambargahs, and rooftops are covered by the police, patrolling policemen must visit them all. According to the IGP, female police officers should be assigned to female gatherings, and police officers and Jawans should be responsible for security tasks outside of imam bargahs. Additionally, he gave the SSP (Traffic) instructions to create a traffic strategy and monitor the seamless operation of other routes during the processions. Parking lots should be kept far away from Imam bargahs, he advised.

The IGP insisted that strict oversight should be kept in place to make sure that security measures put in place by the police and SOPs issued by the government are being implemented. He explained that the bomb disposal unit would use robots and other cutting-edge equipment to verify the routes, and that after the checks were finished, admittance of the participants into the parade would be guaranteed. In order to ensure total cooperation and the success of this plan, instructions were sent to all branches of the Islamabad police. The IGP stressed that there will be no tolerance for faulty security practises.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the BA.5 subvariant of Omicron accounted for 81.9 percent of the circulating coronavirus variants in the United States for the week ending July 23.

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),

This was higher than the previous week’s estimate of 75.9 percent prevalence.

BA.5 has been responsible for an increase in new infections around the world, and it has proven to be particularly adept at evading immune protection provided by vaccination or prior infection.

image 712

According to the data, Omicron subvariant BA.4 accounts for 12.9 percent of all circulating variants in the United States.

The US Food and Drug Administration has requested that vaccine manufacturers focus on the two currently dominant subvariants for a possible fall season booster dose.

US health officials are also urging people aged 50 and up to get a booster shot, adding that doing so will not prevent them from receiving another “bivalent” booster designed specifically to combat Omicron later this year.

Following the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s decision to appoint PTI candidate Pervez Elahi as Punjab’s chief minister, the party’s senior vice chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi stated that “today, the Constitution’s rule has been accepted and the Pakistani people’s mandate has been respected.”

image 707

“On July 17, the people of Pakistan wholeheartedly accepted Imran Khan’s narrative, and we reject this imported government,” said the ex-foreign minister at a press conference.

A three-judge Supreme Court bench today ruled that Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari’s ruling in the Punjab Chief Minister election was “illegal,” and that Pervez Elahi will be the province’s new chief minister.

The CJP stated that “no legal” grounds were presented before the court; arguments were only presented regarding the party head’s directions, and the court concluded that there was no need for a full bench in the current case.

“I will change my mind only if concrete reasons are provided.”

CJP Bandial stated that the real question was who could direct party lawmakers. According to him, the constitution clearly states that the parliamentary party will direct MPs.

The PTI leader blasted the “fascist” government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter for pressuring Malik to go on a hunger strike.

Agha Salman ticks off little milestones with characteristic domestic-cricket grit

There was surprising candour to Mohammad Nawaz‘s admission after the first day that Pakistan’s bowling plans to Sri Lanka might have constituted a form of strategic naivety.

He lamented the number of easy runs Pakistan had given away as they went chasing after the wickets – Sri Lanka had racked up over 300 by stumps – meaning the impact of the steady fall of wickets was undermined by the equally unceasing trickle of runs. Had Pakistan, he mused, focused on bogging the batters down, Pakistan’s exigency for breakthroughs might have been satisfied more economically.

images 7

Agha Salman, still bedding into this side playing his second Test, wouldn’t be quite as frank to level a similar charge at his fellow batters. But the tactical muddle Pakistan’s bowlers found themselves in wasn’t restricted to that department. When Pakistan came out to bat on the stroke of lunch after bowling Sri Lanka out for 378, the visitors’ batting disconcertion was similarly impossible to conceal under the glare of the afternoon sun.

“They were bowling very well and not giving runs away,” Salman said. “They were playing a patient game and our patience was a little bit lacking. I spoke to Yousuf bhai [Mohammad Yousuf, batting coach] and he says if you play under your eye and close to your body, that is the way to do it. Once you spend time out there, batting gets a bit easier.”

Abdullah Shafique’s early dismissal set the tone, but the ripple effects of Azhar Ali’s omission meant Pakistan’s best batter Babar Azam was pushed up to a batting position where he is currently a shadow of the phenomenon that operates as a Test No. 4; his batting average drops from nearly 60 to about 25 when he promotes himself. Mohammad Rizwan, too, has never batted as high as No. 4, where he came in today, and just as he enters a red-ball dry patch, this kind of tinkering is unlikely to do him many favours.

In addition, Pakistan’s apparent anxiety to push the scoring rate up, looking to reprise the role Sri Lanka’s openers had played for their side on the first morning, looked frenetic and rash in the manner of Babar and Imam’s cheap dismissals. In Test cricket, particularly in Sri Lanka, it is difficult to tether yourself to a predetermined scoring rate, simply because the variance in the opposition’s bowling quality and plans is often too great to permit such inflexibility.

Arshad aims for a medal at the CWG after falling short of the world podium

EUGENE: In the World Athletics Championships javelin final on Saturday, Arshad Nadeem ensured that his challenge would last to the very end with his third throw. Arshad had made the final eight halfway through the event at Hayward Field, becoming him the only athlete from Pakistan to have qualified for a final in the history of the competitions, but his effort of 82.05m meant he finished last among them. By that point, the 25-year-old was aware that he needed to beat his previous best if he was to win Pakistan’s first medal at the biennial extravaganza for track and field and make further history.

The standard had already been set at that moment by the 24-year-old Granada champion Anderson Peters (90.46m). Following Peters, who would go on to keep his championship, were Julian Weber of Germany and Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic (both 88.09 metres) (86.86m). Indian Olympian Neeraj Chopra (86.37m) finished fourth. Arshad aimed after setting his goal. With his fourth throw, he produced a season-high 86.16m, 22 centimetres short of his all-time best. After failing to advance farther with his final two throws, it put him up to fifth, where he ultimately placed.

Arshad, who made history by being the first Pakistani athlete to qualify for a track and field final at the Olympics in Tokyo last year, told reporters, “It’s a performance that gives me hopeful for the future.” Arshad competed on Saturday with his throwing arm taped since he has been dealing with an elbow issue ever since the Olympics, where he also placed fifth. Naturally, I was a little anxious because this was my first competition since the Olympics, he admitted. “The medics and authorities of the Pakistan Athletics Federation worked very hard to make sure I could participate here against the best in the world.”

Arshad was looking forward to a podium result in Birmingham because the Commonwealth Games are starting later this month. After taking home bronze in the most recent Asian Games, Arshad said, “I’m happy with my performance and will work hard to bring home a medal at the Commonwealths.” Chopra, who finally won silver behind Peters, gave Arshad a word of admiration for his performance.

Several times, notably in the Asian Games in 2018, where Chopra won gold and his Pakistani adversary placed third, Arshad and Arshad competed against one another. Chopra stated at a virtual press conference, “I spoke to Arshad after the tournament ended. “I told him he did fantastic. “I further thanked him for a great throw and it was a great comeback from injury. He informed me he had troubles with his elbow. He successfully threw the javelin 86 metres, which was impressive.

With his fourth throw, Chopra set a new personal best of 88.13 metres, finishing in front of third-placed Vadlejch, who had won silver in Tokyo, and fourth-placed Weber. His performance in Tokyo, where he became the first Indian to win an individual athletics gold, went above and beyond the 87.58m he produced. India had never won a silver medal in a World Championship before, and Anju Bobby George’s bronze in the women’s long jump at Paris in 2003 was the nation’s only other silver medal ever. Peters, however, who had been in the lead throughout the competition and reserved his best, throw for last with a throw of 90.54 metres, proved unstoppable.

Peters was the only athlete to cross the 90-meter line, and he did it three times at Hayward Field against strong winds. The majority of throwers prefer a headwind, but today there was one, according to Peters. So, today was a little difficult, but I managed it. It is not simple to defend the title. I had to exert effort. Even though I was already a champion going into my final attempt, I worked on my technique with each throw until I finally succeeded. Lassi Etelatalo of Finland finished sixth (82.70m). Oliver Helander of Finland and Andrian Mardare of Moldova both threw more than 82 metres, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Railways making efforts to vacate Zhob Railway Station

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways was putting all-out efforts to vacate the Zhob Railway Station building as soon as possible which was occupied by unauthorized outsiders and was being used for residential purposes following its permanent closure.
The notices as per the new Ordinance of 2021 for removal of encroachment introduced by the federal government were being served to unauthorized occupants, an official in the Ministry of Railways told a state-run news agency.
He said the efforts were being expedited with the assistance of local administration and the levies to retrieve the encroached structures and hopefully the encroachment issue would be resolved.
The Zhob Railway Station was built in 1920 on the narrow gauge Bostan-Zhob segment. It was shut down for passenger traffic in 1985 and for goods traffic in 1990 due to poor economics, he continued. Since the station’s closure, no renovations have been made.
Due to the unstable law and order situation in this tribal area, he stated that the anti-encroachment operation for the evacuation of these unlicensed service structures will be carried out with assistance from the district administration of Zhob.
To a question, the official said Pakistan Railways has taken several steps to improve the financial conditions of the department including Raabta.
He said annually 60 million passengers used Railways for travel. 40 percent of tickets were being sold on the outdated processes without any audit and the Raabta was an initiative of the department towards enhanced customer facilitation by using an artificial intelligence approach.
The official stated that the system is currently decentralized with some shortcomings, including non-flexible fares, antiquated ticketing, and freight parcel booking systems, and the absence of automated reports.
He claimed that the manual system was ineffective and inaccurate. Customers can order car rentals, meals, and refreshments, book hotels, monitor the status of trains, select and pay for seats, and organize their travel using the Raabta platform.
In addition, he said that Raabta enabled users to check their status while traveling and that they could purchase tickets through a variety of channels, including websites, mobile applications, ticket brokers, and reservation agents.
